Well, my reaction to Dave's post is that while I don't question his observation that there was insufficient staff at the AC 7* event to provide an acceptable player experience, it would be helpful if he cited just a specific or two to make his complaint more concrete.
We were greatly disappointed that we were only able to take advantage of events on Saturday, but our experience with that limited exposure was uniformly positive and satisfying.
We thought Harrah's pool deck lunch was extraordinarily nicely catered and conducted, and the only thing criminal was when it came time to leave.
Further, hotel registration (I stopped in Thursday night to claim a good room and receive the Fre(e Play benefit) was simple and straight-forward. (It was surprising that the assortment of coupons, etc., distributed as part of the offer wasn't assembled in advance, but instead collated by the check-in agent, but it didn't prove any real delay either).
Everyone we encountered during the day Saturday who had attended the Lionel Richie show at Caesars on Friday described it as a must see show. We weren't disappointed in seeing the 2nd performance Saturday. All aspects of the show were handled professionally. It was a real highlight of the weekend.
Our redemption of my shopping vouchers at Viking Cooking store at Harrah's and at a shop at the Pier went smoothly, and we're tickled at the merchandise we scored on the offer.
And despite anticipated demand for the restaurants, not only were they able to accommodate a last minute selection of the Steakhouse at Harrah's before seeing Richie, but they served up the best meal we've enjoyed to date there. (We were alarmed at first when all four of us at the table found it necessary to send back our steaks because they were considerably over done vs how ordered, but the waiter dealt with it adroitly and had perfect replacements served up in record time.)
We hosted two out of town players (from the SW) who currently aren't active Harrah's players, when it turned out that they were in the DC area and prospects for another get together at a later date become iffy once we move to Atlanta. It pleased us immensely when, before parting company and our flight to Atlanta Sunday for Bev's start at her new job, one of them remarked it was incredibly refreshing to stay somewhere where the staff repeatedly went out of there way to make you a value guest. This is coming from someone who I consider fairly demanding in what they expect for their money (who, for example, was the first to suggest we send the steaks back to the kitchen, for example). So I consider it more than passive praise.
The bottom line is that this is the first 7* event we've attended in AC and now greatly regret on passing on previous years. You can bet we'll aggressively strive to attend all 4 days/3 nights next year, even though it'll be a much tougher commute than the trek from Philly this year.

I'm a 7* player, but your description makes me glad I didn't attend. The 98% sounds good, but disorganization and disarray are not exactly aspects of my favorite environment.

[vpFREE] Ballys Atlantic City
I visit the East coast once or twice a year, and generally spend a day at Ballys with my mother, including a few hours at the dollar progressive Jacks-or-Better machines. Today was my first Royal on them. It was -- by a hair -- the biggest gambling moment of my life, since I've only hit a few dollar Royals, none of them progressive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5PJBjoRytM
Most of the machines at Ballys now have a screen (the same one where it shows your point accumulation) where you can order a specific drink. Pretty cool technology; it has lots of choices, from coffee to tequila.
I had gotten coupons to avoid the new $10 charge for the diamond lounge. It's got a great view, nice decor, comfy chairs and all. But the food is still nothing special. I really didn't see any change in the buffet compared to when it was free.

We found the 7* event highly disorganised. Staff seemed overwhelmed.
Too many high level gamblers and not enough staff resources provided by management? I'd estimate 1,000 7*?
Enjoyed all the shows. Got kind of disgusted at all the food.
Did observe many 7* VP players gambling at ~98% machines. This had to be very good for the Harrah's syndicate.

[vpFREE] Re: Seats added at M
That brings up another subject. Actual hold is never near what is advertised or mathematically figured especially when the most of the players are playing less than perfect. I have a friend that was an accountant at a casino I will not name. He did regular audits on all machines and he said most were in the 60-80% range over the long term. These were all game king VP machines that he audited. He also noted that almost all of the end machines were in the 80% range while the others were much lower. I have played with this guy for many years and trust his comments. It makes me wonder sometimes how the casinos claim they dont make any money on VP.

Re: [vpFREE] Re: Seats added at M
What I would like to see at the "M" is more multi-line games with a half decent paytable.
I think there is only 1 multi-line machine in the whole casino with 8/5 bonus poker, and you can't play it for any double point promotions.
The main thing that ticked me off about the "M" is that they have really tightened up on the food comps for middle of the road out of towners. I get treated better at other casinos putting through less money.

A.P.

Everyone keeps referring to FPDW. I could care less about this game. I want decent DB, BP and JOB games. I'm not looking for a new job playing vp full time just a decent shot with my money and have some fun. I could care less if they devalued the points of these machines it would just be nice if they were there. Funny thing there is plenty of 10/7 DB and 9/6 JOB in this town so I wouldn't think it would kill the M to put some in. Stations makes a killing on their 10/6 DDB and 10/7 DB. They made the coin in requirement higher in order to keep them, why couldn't the M do the same thing? Palms has plenty of DB at $1 and 25 cent and they still exist after all these years. It seems M doesn't want to sacrifice their cash back on any machine in favor of pay scale. Other casinos do it, they just need to limit the points you can earn on the full pay machines. South point is a different beast all together. The may not have 10/6 DDB or 10/7 DB but most of their
inventory is 99% + which is okay by me. They also have a large selection of different games. M has just a few games in the 99% range in comparison. Ill give them credit on having many 8/5 bonus poker games at least.

But it's going to change. People need to stop living in the past and adapt for the future. Sure, I'd like to play single deck blackjack with a 1-10 bet spread and no heat, but it AIN'T going to happen. Those who refuse to adapt are going to be left behind.

Losing a $120k bank playing $FPDW is a 1 in 10 million shot, no?

The Wizard of Odds has a webpage that discusses the standard deviation of n-play video poker: http://wizardofodds.com/videopoker/appendix3.html
So, you're trying to decide between 2000 spins at $5/spin on NSUD or 2000 spins x 100 lines of 1 cent 9/6 JoB. According to the information from the WoO (the NSUD S.D. is given as 5.077845 on this page: http://wizardofodds.com/videopoker/tables/deuceswild.html), the total S.D. for the NSUD is then 5.077845*sqrt(2000)*$1*5 = $1135.44. Since the EV of NSUD is 99.73%, you're looking at losing $27 on your $10K. Thus, your EV plus or minus one S.D. looks like -$1162.44 to +$1108.44.
For the 100-play JoB, the S.D. is 14.635143*sqrt(100*2000)*$0.01*5 = $327.25. The EV is 99.54%, so you're looking at losing $46 on your $10K. Thus, your EV plus or minus one S.D. looks like -$373.25 to +$281.25.
Clearly, here the JoB is the much less-volatile play.
Hope this helps!

Agreed. Between myself and my partners we average over 15,000,000 hands a year. We passed the "new religion" mark a long time ago and I believe we are well into "hard science" territory. A million hands for us is a little over three weeks.
I do applaud your skepticism. For a long time now I have said that if more people questioned more things the world would be a better place.
Cheers,
