I believe every player has a right to use or not use their card. However card pulling in at least 2 cases could be illegal. First if you're on a loss rebate and you're creating false losses for the rebate. Second if you pull your card creating false gambling losses that you report to the IRS. I suppose in the 2nd case technically the act of card pulling would not be illegal but your false reporting of gambling losses would be.

The Wired article describes a scheme that alters actual machine payout and isn't analogous with "card pulling" (which seeks to mess with the casino recordkeeping of recorded wins/losses, but not actually alter machine payouts).

The implication of being identified as a card puller is typically limited to loss of participation in slot card benefits.

In actuality, over the last few years the major software vendors who provide slot accounting systems to the casinos have largely addressed the hole that card pullers took advantage of (most systems now don't close out a slot session after a player card is pulled until the current game in play is concluded).

I'm not personally aware of any serious players that still engage in the practice.

I know a few card pullers out there. Some are still able to use this method (although not in many casinos anymore). I now wonder if they too could also be arrested for fraud due to manipulation. Anyone out there know of any card pullers who ended up getting a nasty surprise?

So I'm sitting at one of my favorite machines last nite, pounding away, not having any luck. The lady to my left sez something about a big hit. She's playing 10 hand 5c Ultimate X (w/ bad pay table, of course). I stroll over to see dealt royal w/ 2 7X & the rest 2X...$6K (ON NICKELS). I inform her I've been waiting 6 years for that hand on the 10-play I'm on. She had not a clue...She knew she won 6K, but didn't realize how. As people are walking by, I hear her saying 3 times about not remembering what she held B4 I finally explained she hadn't held anything...it was dealt.
