A.P. - Reasonable response to Bob's column. But I disagree with your approach.

Active video poker play is chock full with irrational distractions. A couple of examples:

-- You're playing 9/6 JB and your session is suddenly flush with quads with kickers. You enjoy 9/6 DDB, and it's hard to content yourself that you're really playing the stronger game this session.

-- You have a stronger EV with promotions at casino X, but you always seem to fare better on your session at casino Y.

It's true that in the case of the "change machine" example that there's no EV penalty to changing machines during a sour session. But the very act of doing so implies a mental relief that you've opened the door to better luck.

Once you open that door, it's difficult to shut it, even in situations that involve an impaired EV through a change. I find it far better advice to focus on the truth at hand and simply dispel the irrational from your mind.

Once you accept that bad sessions happen, and develop the discipline to play through them (where sensible), you're a stronger player for it. I think that's doubly true for a casual player.

Don't forget to assess risk. One type of risk is caused by variance, probably the best tool for that is Dunbar's Risk Analyzer, the formula for 3sd is 3 x betsize x sqrt(variance x hands). Another type of risk is caused by player error, just assuming you will get the computer perfect EV in the casino environment is naive. Another type of risk is overbetting your bankroll, namely if your betsize is more than double your current bankroll x EV / variance you will get bankroll shrinkage even with a positive EV gamble. Another type of risk is not including tax considerations which can generate another fee which you weren't expecting.

[vpFREE] Gold Coast

 

Caught an article on the Vegas chatter web site about the Gold Coast

If the whispers are true, Gold Coast's dining scene could be in for a major shakeup.

We hear the off-Strip casino's sole fine dining experience, the Cortez Room, could be closed this year to make way for a rebranding. Word on the street is that the Ports o' Call Buffet is also slated for a closure and that it would be replaced with a 24-hour cafe concept similar to Courtyard Cafe at sister casino, The Orleans. After (barely) surviving a five-night run at the $10 buffet a few years back, we won't be sad to hear that ship has finally sailed.

We reached out to parent company Boyd Gaming for comment. A rep relayed that they didn't have anything to share at the moment, but have a lot planned for their Vegas properties this year.

Has anyone heard any rumors about this being true?
