[vpFREE] Re: Tipping

Hey jeri,

"Equitable" is certainly in the eye of the beholder ...

I've seen some outrageous suggestions for jackpot tipping at bars (reportedly, at least one bartender has suggested that 10% of the win is appropriate).

Personally, I play only one bar bank with any frequency. Because it happens to have the strongest vp in the casino, I'm a little anxious to keep the barkeeps happy. Still, I'm not about to hand over a generous sum simply because they're good about keeping the drinks coming.

Generally speaking, I usually tip 1/2% of a jackpot. In this case, involving a full-pay game with a progressive, I'm comfortable nudging that to 1% ($40 on a $4000 win ... with half to the attendant and half to the bar). The bartenders have been reasonably satisfied with the $20 toke.

That toke is a small fraction of my "bar tab". I'm generally good for two rounds ("soft drinks") an hour. I expect I tip $3/hr on average. I figure about 44 hours of expected play between hits, so that makes for $132 in tips on top of the $20.

We do always leave them a tip, but they point out that video poker players are considerably less generous with their tokes, than, say, keno players. As a matter of fact, the word "cheap" has been bandied about. So what is an equitable amount?

I agree, $1 per drink sounds reasonable unless you are getting specialty drinks then $2.

We play at several local casino bars when the progressive jackpots become "positive." A number of other regular VP players do the same. A question has come up about the amount of tip the bartender deserves. We of course tip the people who pay out the royals, and that amount seems to vary a great deal. What IS a fair amount to tip?

I have a friend who tried to use this and the people he spoke to at the
casino claimed no knowledge of it. In fact, they asked him where he got it
and were totally surprised about it.

This surprised me because whether it's valid or not, I would expect at least
several other people trying to use it.

[vpFREE] Re: New Games in IL

As others have already pointed out Jean, Illinois has legalized restricted gaming in bars/restaurants and truck stops similar to Nevada has for some non-gaming businesses. By law, the games ARE random, the max bet can be no larger than $2, and the max win is CAPPED at $500. The max win rule forces odd changes to the paytable for anyone wagering more than 5 quarters, because otherwise returns would decrease with larger wager. The 5-coin return in your example is 94.79% while the 8-coin return is 94.89% thanks to the straight flush boost. But sadly the odd strategy changes will probably eat that extra 0.1% back for most players crazy enough to play this for $2 per hand.

The best video poker I was able to find in the one restaurant I tried playing this in was 7/5 Super Aces Bonus...97.61% for 1 coin...97.92% for 5 coins (2000 coin royal, 4 Aces)...and I believe 97.98% for max bet (2000, Royal, SF, 4 Aces; 720 4 2-4s; 440 4 5-Ks). State law forces a 80% minimum payout and a 100% maximum payout. Unfortunately, it'll be unlikely to find good paying video poker machines in these locations.

For penny slot addicts, however, based on the first few monthly reports, the penny slots are returning slightly better than the casinos.

What a shame such a beacon of integrity is no longer sharing columns with the world.

Re: [vpFREE] Bob Dancer's LV Advisor Column - 19 FEB 2013

Since several individual references/comparisons were brought up in the column, I have one question that should be of interest to all players. Bob, you said you were not welcome to play at MGM. I presume that is since around the time of you $100k & $400k royals there. But you also said their presumably erroneous records tally that you lost around $400k there. If so, then can you please explain why they would have banned you from playing vp when their records show such a large loss?

Re: [vpFREE] Bob Dancer's LV Advisor Column - 19 FEB 2013

After Ms. O'Connor has resolved all of the legal issues concerning her
behavior it seems that she has an autobiography to write. What caused her to
turn to VP? How long did it control her? Stories of wins and losses; the
games and the stakes she played, the comp treatment she received at different
casinos; and most importantly, did she seek treatment. One last question:
did any casino live up to their "warning label" and urge her to seek help?

RE: [vpFREE] Bob Dancer's LV Advisor Column - 19 FEB 2013

I agree with Rob. I'd like to know more. What were her comps? Where did she play in Vegas? I saw where someone said she played a 1000.00 per hand. How?

James G. Thompson

To: vpFRnd that.

A more important point would be, if Wizard was consulted for the story, how is it that he did not set the record straight here? Such a statement from him, a true expert, would have done wonders for all the speculation we're seeing.

This continues to be an interesting video poker story. If I were still a columnist, I'd certainly try to get an interview with this lady and pay her for it if necessary. Bob's article clearly spells out all the top level facts and questions. A full set of answers would be compelling.
