The someplace you missed it was my book. To paraphrase:
1. Our team has a single investor "the owner"
2. During my stint as manger I was in charge of about 68 active employees.
3. We had 3 scouts. All they did was check meters.
4. We had 2 trainers to teach strategy to new recruits
5. We had the A team. Players carried $500 in walking around money and were first on the scene.
6. The B team usually relieved them.
7. Taxes were transfered to the owner, and not the responsibility of the players.
8. Massive record keeping. Some days that was all I did.
Players got an hourly wage plus bonus for Jackpots. I was the only percentage employee.
During my years with the team we had 5 major competing teams, all structured similarly. We were the largest that played video poker. The red team may have been larger, but played mostly slots.
It's all in the book and a lot more.
Cheers,
~FK

Hi. I am cutting into this conversation without reading the whole thread yet. I have a question, isn't Stations one of the ones that do the average-daily-handle thing? So if you played just a little on one day you get punished? I had that in the back of my mind and it must be from something I have read here.

There are 15 possible positions for a card in the 3 lines of 5 cards.
If you start with a four-card royal, the correct 5th card will give you 5 royals five out of the possible 15 times. So, both you and I got the most common result. Yet it is slightly below average because 9 of the 15 occurrences yield 6 or more royals. And there is only one position that would correspond to either 8. 9. 10 or 11 royals.
You don't have to start with a dealt four-card royal to hit it big. A seven-royal jackpot on Spin Deluxe is possible (though rare) even if you start with only a dealt 3 card royal. But the initial 3 cards as well as the 2 drawn cards completing the royal have to be in very specific and unique positions to generate a seven-royal jackpot.

Thanks for the info. I heard the Fertitta's had worked something out. I can never fully understand how those things go.

The over-100% payback machines at Stations/Fiestas still have the little plaques on them saying they take $4 coin-in to earn one point.
Incidentally they have dropped the "Optimum Play" labeling on these. The faceplates have all been changed and now say "Over 100% Payback".
Unless I missed it, they have not yet emerged from bankruptcy. The "new" owners will essentially be the same as the current owners, the Fertitta's.

Subject: Re: [vpFREE] Continuing Cannery Cuts & Some Advice(Long)
Nudge, this whole post is dripping with a sense of entitlement.
----------------------------------------------------------
Well, don't get any of it on you. It could be caustic.
----------------------------------------------------------
Did you consider the possibility that putting in penny machines in place of
the 8/5 Bonus machines that so many hustlers have been playing might be more
profitable for them and that that's all they should care about?
----------------------------------------------------------
Two part answer. First, you seem to attach a somewhat negative connation to
the word hustler. I do not. Hell, in the older versions of Danny Webster's
dictionary, the definitions are all about rapidly moving people, and the
possible jostling that could result. I prefer to associate the word with
someone who is always using his skill and brains to make money, always
keenly alert to an opportunity. Can we agree that there should be nothing
of a negative nature in that definition? Part two of my answer as to why
putting in penny slots may not be the best move for them can be summarized
in two words, fierce competition. When you are in the locals casino
category, which they definitely are, you should be completely aware of what
your competitors are offering. Of the majors ion the area, Fiesta Rancho,
Texas Station, Santa Fe Statiom, and Aliante Station, I don't believe that
any of them are known as hot bed of penny slot operations. Although I
question the accuracy of their advertising claim, Fiesta Rancho has espoused
for years to be the royal flush capital of the world. If I am not mistaken,
this refers not to penny slots, but to video poker.
A quick note. If my wife and I continue play at the Cannotery, it is
unlikely that they will get very deep into our pockets. Over the past few
years, between us we have had five dealt royals, all on multi-line video
poker, sort of like the grand slam hand of the game.
Let me see if I can alter your perspective. The analogy that I am
presenting will be like most analogies, not a totally perfect comparison.
Video poker and baseball are both games, although the latter is also a
sport. All of the parameters of video poker are set and controlled by the
casino. I am speaking of number of machines, type of games offered,
different denominations available, and most certainly the paytables of the
games. None of these are controlled by the player. The smart choices of a
hustling player (my definition) will be for him or her to determine which is
the best game and type for them to play, which denomination, and quite
importantly, when to play it to offer the best chance for the player to have
a shot at coming out ahead. Frequent guests at this or any other casino
will quickly become aware that the casinos all offer extra player
enticements in the form of multi-point days, promotions, like gift cards,
drawings, free gift days, and especially monthly mailers. In this casino,
like many others, the more play you give them playing a sub 100% game, the
higher the amount of theoretical losses you will accumulate, and therefore
the higher level of a mailer you will receive. The higher your theo. score,
the more BB cash or free play you will get on this mailer. Taking the
current month as an example, a player started playing on the first of the
month, assume it is me, well aware of all the rules and parameters put in
place by the casino. Let's say that in the middle of the month, the casino
decides to change one of their rules that was in place when the month began,
lowering the paytable on one of it's muti-line games, which is what I play
most of the time, and the player has not yet completed the target he wants
in order to get the mailer level that he desires. Your take at this point
is that said player is dripping with entitlement. Back to America's game,
baseball. Head east for a weekend double header between old rivals, the
Yankees and the Red Sox. I believe that the rules of major league baseball
are laid down and sanctioned by the commissioner, Bud Selig's office. In
game one, the Yankees open a can o whup ass on the Sox, having 24 hits along
the way, and crush the Sox
16-3. During the intermission, a rep. from the commissioner calls both
managers to his private box with the following decree. For game two, the
Yankees have to redo their bat box inventory. Just to pick a number, say
they have 100 bats in their box. For game two they will bee allowed six
approved Louisville Sluggers, but the other 94 bats must be replaced with
whiffle ball bats. They will still have the opportunity to get the dealt
royal of baseball, a grand slam, but now the singles that they may get will
most likely be worm burners, not gap splitting scorching line drives. Do
you think the Yankees are going to feel a sense of entitlement at this
point? I understand that I will still have a chance at the dealt grand slam
royal at the Cannotery, but my singles ( full boats ) will not be as
impressive as they were. No, I don't think entitlement is what I feel.
Every day or two, while driving around the valley, I comment to my wife,
there goes another ESS. Anytime I see a dunce driver cutting into an exit
ramp line, darting from the right turn lane into the thru lane on eastbound
Flamingo at the Strip, or going from the high speed left lane all the way
to the Charleston exit ramp on southbound 95 in a single move, I use this
phrase. Of course, the first time, I had to explain it. First E=
Empowered. I am certainly a believer in empowerment. Pursuit of this is
what contributed to the greatness of our country. Second E= Entitled.
Unfortunately, a couple of generations have over used this in raising their
children. The seemingly innocent beginning of things like " my Johnney and
Janey are going to have ALL the things that us and their grandparents didn't
have" which, in a lot of cases went to, " I'm going to GIVE my kids all the
things I didn't have growing up." Overemployment of this can lead to my
S=Special. " Honey, there's only ONE of you that God made, and you are
special. In America, you can be anything that you want to be, and on and
on." In the wrong hands, this training can be dangerous. Ok, enough of
this kind of talk, as this is not the forum for it, but I want you to
understand how I form my opinion on the matter. The bottom line truth that
the Cannotery will realize soon if nothing else changes is, the three line
quarter player will move to single line $ and the five line player will do
the same, or his his wad can take it, $2 single line.
----------------------------------------------------------
I have the exact opposite attitude. I'm amazed at how long they've given too
much away.
----------------------------------------------------------
From what I stated above, I feel that I am ENTITLED to invoke the old
Smith-Barney commercial, I make money the old fashioned way, I earn it.
