[vpFREE] Re: I Need Help with my VP Playing Style

Jeffrey Wilens writes:

<< Can anyone explain the logic of trying to play VP at warp speed, like an assembly line machine (to mix metaphors)?

I realize if you have an advantage machine and if you are really good, and if you play really fast with accuracy, in a fixed period of time your wage (dollars per hour) might be higher.

But it's hard to find advantage machines, and usually they are 25 cent, so what are we talking about $10/hour? Wouldn't McDonald's or a retail store be an easier way to earn $10/hour?

I also appreciate you can earn the "perks" by churning more money through quicker, but if you go at the rights time, or are the right demographic, it seems Vegas at least has lots of perks. Just going on a Sunday night rather than a Saturday could save $50 to $100 depending on where you are staying for the same room.

How "fun" is it to actually play at that 500, 800, 1,000+ hph? Or is just about bragging rights? Is anyone else on this forum in favor of slow and easy? >>

Frankly, it's a little surprising to me to see this kind of message from someone frequenting VPFree. I expect that most of us play VP only if we think we can get an advantage from it. That could be monetary profit, or it could be only earning free rooms and meals. These days, the monetary advantage doesn't solely or even usually lie in the base expectation of whatever game one is playing. To me, the "fun" of VP lasts half an hour, maybe. After, that, I just want to get through it as quickly as possible.

If you're playing with an advantage, then you want to be able to play as fast as possible, to get as much coin in as possible during the time you have available. Or if you're aiming for some target amount of coin in, you want to get it done in as little time as possible, and get on with life.

[vpFREE] Re: I Need Help with my VP Playing Style

Undoubtedly, there are a few athletes who can achieve amazing speeds. But I strongly suspect that MANY of the HPH claims that we see are exaggerated. Or that they amount to self-delusion. What I would suggest to anyone is to have a friend sit next to you, and count the number of hands you complete in 15 minutes. Then see what that comes out to per hour. And have the friend watch your play, and try to note any errors you make, too.

Personally, I think that I can do about 700 HPH without significant errors, under good conditions. With practice, I might be able to do better on a game with which I was very experienced, on a day when I was at my physical and mental peak.

Rather than work on pushing the limits on speed, I think that most players would be better off finding the pace at which they could play error-free. Squeezing in an extra 100 HPH is going to be greatly counterproductive, if at the cost of making even one serious error per hour.

Achievable speed is going to depend on many factors. It will be limited by the characteristics of the individual machine. While I can go at a good clip on a single line machine, I find that I'm much slower even on a three-play machine, just because of the rhythm of how the machine operates. It may be impossible to click past the paced display of results. It may be necessary to wait a beat before pressing the play button again. Sometimes pressing it early simply has no effect. Sticky buttons, of course, are the bane of our existence. Play too fast on one of those machines, and you'll get errors that have nothing to do with mentally making a wrong choice. Another example of a problem machine would be a wide-display machine such as is found at M Resort and various other places. I appreciate what they're trying to do by putting in big screens. However, it turns out that the card display extends beyond my field of vision, and I lose time having to dart left and right with my eyes to take it all in.

The game that one is playing is a big factor, of course. I maintain that you could train a chimp to play JOB. But most of us will be slower on something a lot more complicated, like Double Bonus.

[vpFREE] Re: Vp playing style (speed)

Couple of years ago, Ct. Mohegan Sun eliminated comp points on the $1 and above FPPE (Actually, all paytables >~98%). The points had a cash equivalent of ~.2 percent. Back in the day, people played
2 pickem machines at a time and fast. Nightoftheiguana2000 sayz "tweakers."

Last visit, saw 2 PE machine fast action several times.
But nothing like a couple of years ago. Those still doing it aren't trying to get an advantage.
There getting a buzz. A feeling of euphoria. invincibility.

Got strung out on coffee like Kramer on Seinfeld free coffee episode.
Not my cup of tea. (pardon pun)

If the amount of your theoretical win including comps and free play (or mailed coupons) is going to be positive, then it MIGHT be worthwhile to worry about learning to play faster or playing on two machines. But the more you play, the more bankroll you'll need to. For the average player, trying to play faster to increase potential winnings is probably not worth worrying about.

[vpFREE] Re: Vp playing style (speed)

Simplest reason I see for increased speed when you don't have a huge edge is something like the daily Tier Credit bonus at a Harrah's property.

If you're trying to hit the $10k coin in threshold for a day and like playing single line quarters, it's a huge difference in number of hours grinding between 800hph and 1200hph. One is a long day of play, the other is miserable work.

The answer of "just play a higher denomination" doesn't work if you're a disciplined player who respects bankroll requirements.

Free advertising from TV and new paytables. Joint will be crowded.
Showing 7/5 BP on show but actually changing to fair bets was smart.
Think Curtis was disappointed the paytable change news was so quick?

Another picture of Wendy:

Palms Springs High School then Pierce College in L.A.

When the next board member goes to confessional to get Wendy's forgiveness of sins, your much better off talking about Pierce College and business marketing rather than pole dancing.

Hope the above link's photo didn't disappoint :-)

O.K. NOFG2000,
Thanks for the tweak leads and the article on ungar.
Nice. Won't spoil the fun for others on the tweaker mystery hunt.
The links you provided re Stu Ungar was excellent.

From what I gleaned, hospitality workers got 2 strikes against them. Adding gambling to the mix and do the math. Or is it gambling workers and then add hospitality.

This deserves more discussion on the board. I was in Laughlin 2 weeks ago and we were on the floor about 5 in the morning. There was a tweaker nodding-off at slot machine. Weighed all of 70 lbs. She was in late 20's/30's. One of our favorite hospitality workers was not happy:
"That girl over there. She keeps falling asleep"

Thought came to me, maybe the worker wanted me to complain to suit.
But looking back, it wasn't worker was not happy but rather very sad.

Laughlin/Bullhead has meth problem. Billboards all over. Police log...

[vpFREE] Tuscany Issues

Just an update to my recent experience of having Brad's and my slot card "deactivated" at Tuscany. I talked to the new marking director, Wendy Perez, who explained that they were having trouble with a person – or persons – using more than one card. She said one person had been downloading free play from 20 different cards and they were trying to "catch" that person. I'm not sure that this explanation tells the whole story – but it does indicate that they are going after people who play on and/or collect from multiple cards. So a word to the wise...... She did add that this was NOT a problem for spouses.

We could keep our same cards, but we were asked to choose a new pin # and when we did a pickup today, all was well. This makes us breathe easier – we have over 4k in comps that we were afraid we might lose!!!
