Re: [vpFREE] Closing Again

I find the article a bit annoying, because it's more speculative than factual in nature.

If a new round of casino closures comes to Nevada, it will be squarely on the operators' shoulders.  When other businesses (including casinos) have demonstrated that safe operation in the era of COVID-19 is possible, if LV operators fail because of inadequate measures, I would hope shareholders would blast every responsible manager deep into the desert.

As I've noted, I returned from a week in Reno/Tahoe on July 3 (sticking around for the 4th seemed more than a little foolhardy, even under the best of circumstances).  I was thoroughly impressed by the measures employed at the casinos in which we stayed (Harrah's L Tahoe, Eldorado, Nugget, Atlantis) ... so much so that I readily set aside my considerations about dining in the restaurants (originally planned on take-out to the room).  These casinos were largely committed to creating a safe and reassuring guest environment.

(I expect that last week will mark the only occasion where we'll dine in a Gordon Ramsey restaurant with tables spaced more than a foot apart ... Harrah's LT opened Hell's Kitchen off the casino floor (in the spot formerly occupied by the Sage steakhouse, which in turn has relocated to the former site of 19 Kitchen at Harvey's) with 6' spacing between tables.)

From sporadic reports here, I have the sense that the "majors" in LV have behaved similarly.  But, yeah, I heard of Cosmo as being a notable outlier (doing little to promote distancing with the evening throngs).  I guess I'm smiling a bit at even the thought that the "D" might succeed where the Cosmo failed ;).

But my general perception from reports here is that the Strip and local properties aren't a total spittle-spray free for all.  Most heartening of all is that the renewed precipitous surge in NV reported  COVID-19 cases peaked on July 3 and then flat-lined through yesterday.  That's clear evidence that people haven't been blind to the surge and have (at last) implemented measures that, for now, have plateaued new case incidence.

The June surge in NV reported cases was alarming and a clear sign that a lot of operators really f'd up the re-openings.  But I take heart that more effective measures are in place (and I hope bars continue to remain closed until new case numbers fall significantly, only then reopening with a very defined guidance in place).  Bottom line, I consider it very much premature to speculate that a new round of casino closures is imminent.

With Nevada's rates rapidly rising, is anyone surprised?
