Hi Gang:
A few more random thoughts on our recent trip to Horseshoe Cincinnati and the Derby.
1) Horseshoe Cincinnati is a totally non-smoking casino, which came as a pleasant surprise to Hedy and me. The casino is bright, comfortable and CLEAN. Very little good VP to play but a pleasant atmosphere and the restaurants are quite good. We ate two meals in the buffet and one in Jack Binion's Steakhouse.
2) We were told by a host that the buffet was free for 7 stars guests but ran into some resistance to that concept when we went there for lunch on Thursday. After a little debate, however, the manager took care of the charge for us.
We also dined with a celebrity that day! A few tables away sat the Big O, Oscar Robertson, who I consider one of the top five basketball players of all time.
3) Hosts roam the floor greeting you while you're playing and ask if you have plans for lunch or dinner. On Friday, a host came by, introduced herself and wrote us a comp for dinner in the buffet.
4) We were also told by a host when we were planning the trip that they could provide tickets for Reds' games at Riverfront Stadium, which is just a few blocks from the 21C Hotel. I'm not sure if this is just a 7 stars perk or not but we may go back in September and take in a Reds-Mets game during our stay.
I don't know if they have a private suite like the one Caesars has at Citi Field but I'm a big Met fan and it would be a treat to see them play in an enemy ballpark.
5) The shuttles from the partner hotels to the casino run every half hour at the top and bottom of the hour and are very convenient. They drop you off and pick you up just steps from the casino. The shuttles are also luxury vans and very comfortable. Bottles of chilled water are available on the shuttle.
6) The 21C also had some other interesting features. Behind the registration desk is a huge mirror. Under the desk are motion sensors. When you trip them, the mirror shimmys.
On the desk is an old fashioned tap bell. It's connected to a chandelier-type light above the sidewalk outside the hotel. When you tap the bell, the lights change color and flicker and a rush of air shoots down onto the sidewalk. Watching passersby react to this was priceless. Just part of a lot of fun stuff at the hotel.
