The very first night of the game, I was at Harrahs Reno and the TR people looked at me as if I had two heads when I asked them about a the game, the kiosk and a bonus code.. I have not been back yet... However, I have a feeling Harrahs will end up having some extreme regrets from this game, somewhere on the level of the Treasure Hunt... The only possible salvation for Harrahs is that a majority of prizes are Reward Credits, which have little actual "cost" for them.. (unlike if they were on the hook for glitches that gave out all Best Buy cards per se...)

Subject: [vpFREE] more on Harrahs game
Though it seems it is easier to get game pieces when playing with the iPad,
I had several come and then not appear on my GameBoard. I emailed TR and
got the following response, which seems to indicate you need to play with
Internet Explorer - so maybe the game isn't working with the iPad or AOL??
Also a host told me that the kiosks were not working nationwide. Can
anyone report they are now working?
Sounds like this game was put out well before it was ready -- yet everyone,
and I mean everyone, at Harrah's Laughlin had ribbons promoting this game.
Though the Total Rewards department had no clue as to how to play.
-----------------------
We apologize for any inconvenience however our vendor is aware of these
issues and the game is currently down for maintenance. We anticipate that it
will be back up for your use later today.
When the game is back on line, please remember the following helpful
information:
- Bonus Game Codes: Although you can only enter 10 codes per day, we have
over 30 Facebook pages where you can find codes to use.
- Multiple Users: We have found that in order for two account holders to
play the online game, you will need to delete the cookies on your browser to
allow the second Total Rewards number to be recognized. On your browser,
open up your Internet Options and then click on delete where it talks about
cookies.
- Browser & Adobe Flash Player: Please make sure you have the current
versions of Internet Explorer (version 7+) and Adobe Flash Player. These are
necessary for the game to work correctly.
- Creating a Total Rewards Account: The reason you need to create an
online account is because some of the prizes within the promotion include Total
Reward Credits. We will need the game to associate with your Total Rewards
number to allow us to make the adjustment if you win Reward Credits..
- Apple Products: Do not run Adobe Flash player which is needed to play
the game. However, phones such as Android are good to go!
- Mobile Devices: As far as Facebook codes, most mobile devices will not
disclose all page information and you will need to be on a computer to
locate the Escape to Total Rewards link on each page. You will find the link to
the left of the page under the profile picture.

I'm willing to bet the article is inaccurate. (For that matter, your
analogy doesn't hold water either.)
<<<<<< I'll defer to your accounting expertise here since this isn't the
point I wanted to make.>>>>>>
...................
As far as OP's "analogy" -- There have historically been tax advantaged
investments that were structured so that they generated sizable expenses on
an accrual basis that weren't matched by actual cash outlay, so that for the
taxpayer qualified to capture those accrued losses, the investments
generated a potential cash influx up front. While in theory there should be an
eventual recapture of those tax payments with subsequent tax liability, the
issue is that the investments in essence effected a free loan from the IRS.
The IRS has since cracked down on the deductibility of such expenses.
<<<<<< The most significant changes occurred in the Tax Reform Act of
1986. In 1985, I finished a class on tax shelters & this act obviated
everything I learned. >>>>>>
This is in no way analogous to the situation here. Again, I'll emphasize
in this case there's no unusual tax break for Citi to be realized at all.
As far an any recipient of a 1099 involving an inflated market valuation
of property, they should take appropriate steps to document a more realistic
value and file on that basis. (I don't have sufficient experience with
this to comment further.)
<<<<<< This is the point I wanted to make: "take appropriate steps to
document a more realistic value and file on that basis." >>>>>>

Glen,
This happened to me in 2009 at the Peppermill where I won a Mercedes E-350
in a drawing. The window sticker was $62K. My CPA instructed me to
immediately go to a car club on-line (like Costco) and request a quote for
the
identical new car model from a local dealer. I was able to use the lowest
written quote to reduce the basis for the income tax by about $5K.
Walter H in Florida
<<<<<<< I remember this well since it was up on Peppermill's ad boards
for months afterwards. When I asked what you had done with it, I was
surprised to hear that you had driven it back to Florida. I've also had the
pleasure of being in Walter's company when he was dealt a royal on a 100--play.
What was even more amazing was his royal count on that trip was something
like 120 & rising. I did not stay to find out how high it got because he was
sucking up all the royals!
Re 1099 wins, here's what I've done on some of them:
1. Harley-Davidson motorcycle: as soon as I won it, someone in the
audience asked if I wanted to sell it. Yes! That night I still searched the
Internet to come up with market-value documentation just in case the deal fell
through. The next day went to my bank with buyer, had crude bill-of-sale
drawn up, took his check, bank cleared it, went to dealer & gave buyer
original title. Kept the paperwork on market value & bill-of-sale just in case it
ever came up with IRS. Received 1099.
2. Car with sticker value of $35K. Casino gladly converted it to $40K of
free play over 12 months. Yes, I did record all sessions & reported it. I
know the alternative is to play through the free play only without a card but
I sleep better doing it my own way. No 1099.
3. 2-year lease on any car on lot. Tried to talk dealer into converting it
to down payment on a sale. Dealer offer wasn't much better than cash from
casino so took cash from casino. Easy-to-report 1099 because it was cash.
4. 7-day NCL cruise to any of destination in Alaska, Caribbean or Mexico.
Didn't want cruise so talked to travel agency about using it as credit for
a trip that I did want. Didn't research the cruise value, but when travel
agency heard what I wanted to do & to purchase an upgrade, they gave me a
$7K credit which was fine with me. Used it to purchase a $10K Rocky Mountain
train trip. Received a $7k 1099 which was fine since it felt like a good
value compared to a cruise that we weren't going to take.
5. $3500 (retail) HDTV. At time of receipt FMV was below $3000, in 6
months it was $2500. Took 1099 at full value & didn't bother to look for
documentation on lesser FMV. My losses that year covered it.
These probably were over the last 10 years & I've received several items
where I do the research & get documentation if I get any non-cash 1099.
When I blog, I like to write stream-of-consciousness (?) style if that's
the write term. But I need to put this as a separate paragraph to denote
this is a separate from the 1099s. When going to shopping sprees, like
Harrah's Great Gift Wrap Up (GGWU), it's important to bring a cell with Internet
capability so that you can research the value of items. For instance, I had
some items that I've been wanting to obtain the last 2 years but both times
ended up with free play since the conversion rate made the items
overpriced using points. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It will be interesting to see if all the players who were "no-mailed" will be welcomed back, given the new management.

I was corrected on the ACVPP board as to 10/6 DDB being FP. Looked it up on VPFREE2; FP DDB is 9/6 (@98.98%). My heart sank remembering the "devil game" when first introduced. Don't know who coined that phrase back in Skip's day?
There's merit to keeping iterations showing games that "in and of themselves" have a theoretical advantage. Keeps hope alive that better days are ahead.
I believe it is in-line with a policy of this group:

Also Stations and Fiestas have brought back point multipliers for Senior
Wednesdays at least for March.
From their websites:
$1 = 10 Points on Slots.
$1 = 6 Points on Video Poker.

I agree with Cogno on this one. "Full Pay," when you're specifically speaking of FPDW, does not mean what full pay does in other contexts. FPDW is a particular pay schedule --- namely 15-9-5-3-2-1-1 at the bottom end --- and "full pay" is part of the common name. Although FPDW will largely disappear in a year or two, one or two old machines will probably survive --- likely for a decade or more. Although I prefer the "highest pay table available" definition of "full pay," that definition isn't universal. Casinos have used the word to mean a variety of things. Station used it to mean 100% games (which means 9/6 JoB is NOT full pay over there) and Silverton uses the term to refer to one bank of Multi Strike machines (where the best game is 8/5 Bonus return 99.37%) and two Quick Quad Wheel Poker machines (where the best game returns about 99.5%). NSU has a perfectly good nickname --- i.e. NSU. Anyone who starts calling that game FPDW will meet with strong resistance. Bob

Michael Gaughan, owner of the South Point, will be a
guest on our show tomorrow evening, 7-8 at 1230AM in Las Vegas or www.klav1230am.com from anywhere.
There will be questions that provide some insight into
the South Point system, such as:
Do wins
and losses figure in to the monthly mailers.
If a
player does lose his slot club privileges, is there an appeal system? And if
so, what is it?
Almost
every other casino has VIP lines --- except the South Point. Why is that?
The
online software used by SouthPointPoker.com seems clumsy compared to that on
other sites prior to Black Friday. Are you going to stay with it or switch to a
more state-of-the-art software system?
When
you put your card into the South Point card reader, it does not give you your
point balance. How come?
If the
police ask you to "be on the lookout for xxxxx xxxxx because he is wanted
for xxxxx" do you always comply, never comply, or decide it on a case by
cases basis?
How
often does your casino tighten its machines?
We
asked for help from our listeners in designing questions. Thank you goes to all
those who sent one or more in.

I do think NSUD can become known as full pay as a new generation of advantage players comes into existence and FPDW disappears. Different generations of players will definitely have an affect on naming. I hear it now when I talk to newer players.
