Re: [vpFREE] Ohio gambling tax considerations

<<I won a jackpot , I live in New York State and they
informed me that they had to take out 6%>>

Which Ohio casino was this?

I am still needing more Ohio information from people with personal experiences there. Please specify which casino you visited since each of the 4 cities have their own city tax rate and specific rules.

Now that all 4 Ohio casinos are open, I will be updating the information in my tax book. I need some input from players with personal experiences in those casinos since I am not finding complete information online. Here is some of the information I have gathered, but would appreciate any corrections or additional details.

As of January 1, 2013, Ohio residents got a new state tax break they did not have previously, deducting gambling losses from gambling wins like the federal allows.

I believe the following CITY tax rates are correct but would appreciate any additional information:

Columbus: 2.5% applies to both city residents (both for winnings inside and outside of the city, i.e., in Las Vegas) and to non-residents who hit a W-2G jackpot in the Columbus casino. A quirk here is that this city tax goes contrary to the new state tax break and does not allow deduction of losses for residents or non-residents unless they are professional gamblers. http://www.taxandcontroversy.com/2013/01/gambling-income-in-the-city-of-columbus-ohio-is-now-taxable.html

Cleveland: 2% only on residents

Cincinnati: 2.1% on residents and non-residents

Toledo: 2.25% with a $2500 exemption that is claimed by filing a Toledo City tax return

I believe Ohio does NOT take out STATE taxes at the time you are paid a W-2G jackpot, correct? However, do all or some of the above 4 cities take out the CITY tax at that time? I think I read that Toledo and Columbus withhold city taxes but not sure about the other two.

TIA for any input!

Re: [vpFREE] Re: Tipping Casino Hosts

Actually most casinos have rules about tipping and hosts. A few do not
allow their hosts to accept tips at all. Many have a monetary limit.
However, hosts all over the US mostly routinely "break the rules" in this
area. In all our almost-30 years of gambling we have never had a host refuse
a tip except one (from NYNY) who said she was limited to $75 when we gave
her $100. We solved that problem by Brad and I each giving her $50
separately.

Brad and I probably routinely "break the rules" because we don't ask what
the rules are. We just make friends with our hosts and give generous gifts
to them when they go out of their way to serve us. We are generous to
everyone that way - especially Brad is. When he is out of Vegas, he still
wants to tip everyone who does anything for him.

Tips never "cost" us - we always get back much more than we give. Cast thy
bread upon the waters...and you reap smiles, friendships...and yes even
monetary benefits. We just can't help that!!!! It is really hard to give
more than you receive!

Re: [vpFREE] Re: Tipping Casino Hosts

Why would anybody tip a host when their primary job is to get their customers to empty their pockets, under the guise of well-placed words, smiles, and a reel 'em in gesture every now & then? I've never seen one open their wallet and tip the customer after coming in, losing thousands, and helping to keep their job secure.

Bob has his own writing style and I agree a short sentence or two would be enough so people would not think he is a jerk walking with a women other than his wife.

A slot tech mistakenly put a dollar denom bill acceptor into a $5 machine.

This phenomen happened from time to time when I was in Nevada and greedy dimwit hustlers would take a couple of fills then haul ass.
It happened to me one time at the Riverside in Laughlin. I was spinning off a dollar Diamond Mine and the machine quit taking bills. I needed some tokes so I shoved a twenty into the machine on my left and went to hit the cashout button, but the credit meter started zooming up and didn't quit until it got to 400 credits. Some slot tech had mistakenly put a nickel bill acceptor into a dollar machine.

I leaned back in my chair, thinking about what I should do, for a few seconds. I glanced up at the ceiling without moving my head. Eyes in the Sky's were everywhere. I sat there until a floor person came along.

"I got a problem with this machine" I said "I stuck a twenty in it and it racked up 400 credits. I need my twenty dollars back."
"Oh, my!" she said. "I'll go get someone."

A few minutes later an assistant slot manager showed up and asked me what the problem was.

"I put a twenty in this machine and it racked up 400 credits. I need my twenty dollars back."

"Wow!" he said. "It would have taken us forever to figure that out! You're an honest guy. I'll get your twenty to you in a few minutes."

He opened the machine and shut it down, sticking the log book in the window. Yeah, sure I'm an honest guy. Little did he know. I was making a good living in the Riverside and wasn't about to blow it for some short end money.

In those days, anytime a machine took a fill, the floor attendent recorded the date and time in the log book of the machine. Three fills in a 24 hour period and the floor person was required to get a slot mechanic to check the machine to see if it was overpaying, or if anything else was causing a problem. That's why most of the cowardly hustlers would just take two fills then haul ass.

But the sharper and braver crooked hustler played it a different way. He played for hand pays. He's getting a $3 spin for 15 cents. A 90% machine becomes an 1800% machine. In those days a $400 jackpot or higher was a handpay. He played for handpays as long as he felt like he could get away with it. Then he hauled ass without taking a single fill.

RE: [vpFREE] Caesars $5 machine arrests+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

More recently, IGT had a problem with an update to the Spinpoker program.

When you put in a bill, it gave you credit for twice the amount you put in.
(Said it had to do with currency conversion but that makes no sense.)

They asked people to return the money. Do not know how successful that was.
( Suspect not very!!)

This was first noticed at Trump (Gary, IN) and lasted about twelve hours
before being caught.

At that point all Spinpoker games across the country were shut down to
correct this.
