[vpFREE] Palms scratch promo

This is for Thursdays in Sept., and only good for slots (reels and video reels), NOT Video Poker.  You get a scratch card for every jackpot over $25.  You can get as many scratches as u win, 10 a.m. To 10 p.m. thursday.  Since I play on slots sometimes, max bet at pennies, I get a lot of those 2500 coin penny jackpots ($25).

Here are my results.  Of 38 cards, 19 were $5 free play, 3 $10 play, 10 free lunch buffet, 6 dinner buffet.  <I played for about 5 hours today, keeping just about even so I kept playing and playing!>

HOWEVER - the buffets must be used within 10 days, and how many can a person eat?  Further,   My name is on the cards,  and I must accompany any guest, so I can't just hand them out to friends.  On top of that, the lunch is not valid for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.  (It also says no good for the Seafood buffet Tues., but apparently that starts at dinner, so it is okay for Tues. lunch).   The Dinner Is good for Sunday brunch (lunch!), but only M, W, Th, because it isn't good Friday, Sat. Or Tues. seafood buffet.

So the buffet part is pretty dumb. I asked a manager if there was anything they could do -- like trade up 5 cards for dinner at the coffee shop or something....but the answer was no.

So what could be a decent promo for the Palms to compete with (for example) Gold Coast's multiplier swipes promo, turns out to be kind of dumb and annoying when you get all those buffets!  (Unless perhaps you had 5 kids to take out to lunch....but of course they are in school on the days for the lunch buffet.....or maybe a senior citizen bridge group...?  I'm still trying to figure out if I can use them some way.   And of course the free buffet isn't really all that valuable to me anyway, since I'm an All Star tier member and get 75% off.....and I don't think I could take their buffet more than twice a week....)

I was thinking of going again next Thursday -- but the thought of more buffet coupons is making me shudder a bit.... (the extra $125 in free play was nice though!...but was it worth the hassle of waiting for an attendant to come 38 times?....that was probably about an hour's worth of sitting waiting at the machine and not playing....if you played two machines side by side it would be a little less boring, but possibly more expensive.....I should have brought my iPod to listen to).

By the way, the Palms is now reissuing player's cards (probably to get rid of all the people who were upgraded to All Star because they had Diamond or 7 Star or other high tier status a couple of months ago).   No changes in the Palms benefits apparently.

Re: [vpFREE] Value of drawing

That's a very fascinating problem.

Your numbers make sense except that you'd have to add some weighting to each of the 84 prizes - they are not equal. You could start with a simple EV calc of each jackpot. So my napkin numbers tell me that you have 1% on 50,000, which is close to $500, not $884.

The other issue is that you're dealing with very "nebulous" numbers. First off you're making estimates on top of estimates on top of estimates. So that will cloud things. Also, if this one was like other raffles I've been to, they do them over a long period of time (not all in one shot so that people will stay longer). The estimate you come up with at 6PM may be far off from the estimate you get at 10PM when they do the big(ger) prizes - people will know to show up later because thats when the going is good. You would have to factor in some element of time into your calculations.

Overall, I would assume that your EV is still rather thin to start and more people showing up will only degrade the edge. Take the early prize.

Drawing official estimated 10,000,000 to 30,000,000 entries depending how many people are at the casino.  I estimate 2,500 people at casino with avg (over estimated) entries of 20,000 each equals 50,000,000 entries, double the official estimate to 60,000,000 entries, divided by 530,000 equals 1 out of 95 chance to get called.  $84,000 divided by 95 equals $884.  Is it a $384 advantage to turn down the $500 ?

[vpFREE] Vegas Trip Report, Labor Day Weekend--Day 4 of 4, The Return of the King--Last post, I promise

Got up about 6:00 a.m. without an alarm or wake-up call.  Kind of amazing actually because that's when I normally wake up three time zones east.  Has my internal clock adjusted to the local time after three nights?

Anyway, I got a text from the s-i-l at 6:15 a.m. letting me know that he was ready to roll.  I told him to meet me down in the Bellagio Casino in the nickel video poker area.

We played some terrible video poker for a while, waiting for a cocktail waitress--to no avail.  Apparently I hadn't learned my lesson earlier in the trip. We finally gave up and headed down to the Avis Focus.  (Still 0 of 5 Royal Flushers for the Bellagio cocktail waitressess in the cheap seats).

Off we headed out of the self-parking garage onto something--The Strip, Flamingo?--I'm not very good with street names, but I'm great on landmarks (4.5 out of 5 Donner Party Guides).  Anyway, as we waited at the stoplight to get onto whatever street it was, we got to watch a boffo slugfest on the sidewalk in front of Caesars.  I thought the two young men were messing around until I realized that they were swinging pretty hard for just messing around.

(I think my Yahoo email has a little touch of the Ebola.  My continuations of Day 4 keep disappearing.  If they don't show up, you didn't miss much.  I'll try and finish this with a big "copy and paste").

Anyway, the s-i-l and I were at the Gold Coast.  It was 7:30 a.m. and I was to return my car to Avis by 9:30 a.m. We weren't scheduled to leave for the airport until 3:30 p.m., so I called Avis, whining about keeping the car past 9:30 a.m.  The Avis person very graciously agreed to let me return the mighty Focus at 11:30 a.m.  First hurdle crossed.

The s-i-l and I then headed out to Red Rock Casino.  We settled in at the "Up to 99.8%" machines.  I was playing dollar SL NSUD and temporarily turned my $200 into $490.  Of course I managed to cash out $0 by the time we left.  And leave we did.

Hurdle #2 involved checking out of MGM by 11:00 a.m., Bellagio by noon, and Caesars by 3:30 p.m. (5 out of 5 Roman Emperors).  The Honeymooners who were staying in our room at MGM had departed early, so we were going to check the room and check out of the room.  So the s-i-l and I picked up The Little Woman and the Spendthrift Princess at Bellagio and headed up (or down) the street to MGM.  It was a wasted trip as housekeeping had already declared the room vacant and our key no longer worked.  We went to the front desk to check out along with the other several thousand people who were leaving at the same time.  We ended up just throwing our key in some check out kiosk that didn't seem to work anyway and drove back to Bellagio.

The four of us got the Focus into an Avis parking slot before 11:30 a.m. and I slid the keys into the drop box.  The Spendthrift Princess and the s-i-l headed off to Caesars to use the last of our resort credit for lunch.  TLW and I headed up to our room, gathered up our belongings, cried about leaving the world's greatest selection of complimentary toiletries (6.5 out of 5 Avon Calling) in the room as we checked out.  Boy they have nice toiletries.

I'd like to point out here that on our last morning, I asked the Bellagio VIP Service Beautiful Young Woman if I could get a late check out.  She said she could only give me until noon because the Salon Suites were all rented that day and they had to be cleaned (0 out of 5 Front Desk Pinocchios), but that was okay because we were just lugging our luggage to the Spendthrift Princess' room at Caesars.  And so we did.

The great desk person at Caesars had basically forced me to take a 3:30 p.m. check out so we could relax in the room until we were to leave for the airport.  TLW and I dropped our luggage in the Caesars room and headed down to the casino. We found two side-by-side Lord of the Rings slots and we slapped in $20 each.  Then another $20.  I smashed a troll or something with a catapult, so I won most of our deposit back.  I think we ended up losing about $13.

Back up to the Caesars room to watch more TV.  I think Caesars has better TV programming than Bellagio.  The Spendthrift Princess and s-i-l enjoyed the free movies, by the by.

So the four of us went down to the valet area a few minutes early.  Our limo zipped up with a young woman driver who would be called gorgeous if you considered a beautiful, shapely, blonde woman with a delightful eastern European accent gorgeous (8 out of 5 "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall").  Not that I really noticed.  She got us to the McCarran without incident and home we headed a couple of hours later.

So that's about it.  Here's the wrap-up, all on my and The Little Woman's prior play:

Comps:

3 nights Bellagio Salon Suite,

3 nights Caesars Palace Augustus Tower,

3 nights MGM Grand.

$600 food and beverage at Bellagio,

$250 food and beverage at Caesars.

$700 free play,

4 GREAT seats at Zarkana,

Bellagio limo for six from McCarran,

Caesars limo for four to McCarran.

Expenses:

Airfare for me and TLW--$518 after partial reimbursement,

About $190 in tips (mostly for limos and a couple of bigger meals),

$62.81 in miscellaneous food/drink expenses and Red Rock Canyon,

$197 for Focus,

$16 gasoline.

I ended up about $340 ahead on video poker (which means I went home with about half of my free play).

The Spendthrift Princess and s-i-l and the young Honeymooner couple covered their own airfare, taxis, and some of their food and drink.

I wrote this report as a thank you to all the vpFREEers who take the time to share information with the rest of us.  I want to salute the Royal Flusher, whose ribald tales I enjoy, and especially the king of trip reports, Westie, to whom this report is an humble homage (Come on.  Let's all use our Cockney accents—"'umble 'omage").

The end.

Max

[vpFREE] Re: Vegas Trip Report, Labor Day Weekend--Day 4 of 4; The Return of the King

Well, that was weird.  Not sure what happened, so let's start over:

There was a young woman standing near the fight.  I kind of surmised (perhaps unfairly) that she was probably central to the tiff.  It's a very long light coming out of the Bellagio garage, so we watched more than I really cared to.  Eventually one of the combatants took off running when his opponent's cavalry came charging down the sidewalk.  The light finally changed and we drove off to Gold Coast (4 of 5 Apathetic Bystanders).

At the Gold Coast, we once again fell on the quarter STP and MS like ravenous Cleveland Indian fans at Dime-a-Dog Night.  And lost some money.

The bigger problem was that I had to have the car back to Avis by 9:30 a.m. and our flight home wasn't until early evening.  At 7:29 a.m., I called Avis.  No answer.

Are you mostly a nickel and penny player?

Max wrote:  NOTI,

I hate this Yahoo email format.  I'm much more comfortable with Google.  Anyway...

Back home, I was more of a $5-$1 player.  With the unfortunate decrease of pay tables back in my "local" casinos at the end of 2013, I am now much more of a multi-line nickel player.

In Vegas, I'll play my freeplay on the best pay table available (or sometimes on a lower variance game/machine with a reasonable pay table) and then mostly play for recreation.  At Bellagio, $5 SL 9/6 JOB seemed to be the best game for my free play, so that's where I played it.

I have a job in the non-gambling world, so I don't rely on video poker for an income.  I enjoy, as does The Little Woman, many of the benefits available through the casinos, so I try and work that angle without losing my rumpled white derriere.

Good stuff, thank you. 5 out of 5 trip report memes.

If 3/1 is the best available JOB for nickels, I would suggest checking the quarter level to see if you can find a 4/2 schedule, then play one coin per line.
