My theory is that anything that can be addictive must have something
good about it, which is true of just about anything. Recreational
gambling doesn't have much appeal to me, but I find it hard to believe
that all recreational gamblers are making a mistake. I assume the
attraction is similar to my attraction to the suspense of not knowing
how, say, a movie or a sporting event will end and I suspect that
professional gamblers would find their occupation much more tedious if
casinos mailed them checks for their expected value and negated all
their fluctuation.
But influential people should be careful of what Frank is referring
to. I routinely jaywalk and often, a crowd of people follows me
across the street. I'd hate to have one of them have an accident just
because they blindly followed me. They may have the primary
responsibility for being careful, but I believe I still have some
responsibility. There have been situations in which I have believed
that I could have safely jaywalked, but that, if other, less careful
people had followed me, they might not have been safe, when I have
waited until the "walk" sign.

Sorry to be so dense - but "where" have you posted the spreadsheet? I've been to the "Gambling with an Edge" site -and I've not been able to find it? Thanks.

I can accept that you don't want to inadvertently condone negative expectancy gambling, but I'm afraid you might have missed a/the major point of my reply. Mainly, statements like:
> And playing regular FPD is not worth anyone's time
are just not absolutely true. While it might be true for you, there are many people for whom that is not true. You evaluation of what is a waste of your time is based on your experiences, goals, mental constructs, situation, etc... Other people should not necessarily conform to your value judgments as others all have different experiences, goals, etc...
A large percentage of FPDW players are retirees who enjoy having a hobby that provides entertainment, extra income, and (because a lot of those players are daily regulars) social engagement. FPDW is a great fit because it is a low variance game with an extremely easy strategy to learn. It certainly is not a waste of time for those people.
> I think you need to ask yourself, "If you are gambling and making less than you would at your regular job, why are you doing it anyway?"
>
> Except for it's income potential, it is a completely pointless endeavor.
>
As most statements that are absolute in nature, this over-simplification makes it untrue when applied to a lot of specific situatons.
For me, when I started out with a small bankroll, grinding out $25/hour playing quarter deuces two machines at a time, I was making less than I did at my previous job. But getting to set my own hours, never having to punch a clock, ask for days off, or set an alarm made the pay cut worth it (to me). Although I never quantified what those perks were worth to me per hour, I knew qualitatively that I was happier than I was in the rat race.
I know you also value such intangibles because you explained how you were willing to skip opportunities in order to have less stress in your life. That stress reduction was worth a cost in money and time to you. In much the same way, there are abstract benefits that make FPDW worth its opportunity costs to others.
And even if we talk from only a monetary POV, even though I was making less per hour when I started grinding FPDW, it gave me the experience and allowed me to build a skill-set that enabled me to move beyond it. I've netted 7 figures from vp in a fraction of the time it would have taken for me to do that in my old job. So I can say with certainty that FPDW wasn't a waste of time for me.
All in all, I feel that you are entitled to make the judgment that FPDW is a waste of time. I even welcome you to state it publicly. I'm not criticizing you or your evaluation.
But I do feel compelled to stress to the readers that such a statement is not an absolute truth, it is an opinion. Unfortunately, the opinions of experts are often taken as facts especially by the novice or completely uninitiated. I make it a point to discourage people from blindly accepting a statement just because it comes from a place of authority. I find that I am much better off studying as needed and then forming my own opinions as I am the only one who knows my particular sitation.
[vpFREE] Re: Beta testers
hi, dan -
i'm interested in your beta test, if you're still looking for mac users.
i'm running mac OS X (10.6.7) on a 2.33 GHz intel core 2 duo powerbook, with 3GB 677 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
i play mostly DDB, TDB and various deuces games at what i would consider the skilled recreational player level. i've finished positive for two of the last three years and had 108 handpays last year, so some might consider me an AP.
thanks for your consideration.

[vpFREE] East Peoria Trip Report
Other trip reports usually are "I got 6 Royals, and my wife got 20, they gave us a penthouse suite and hand fed us lobster." My trip was not like that. Stopped at Par-A-Dice driving home from Vegas. Thought I could use my points to pay for the room, NOT. Food was okay, room was nice, lost my a$$!

Actually Bob is my idol, for the sole reason he was a Big-Name DBA in So-Cal...and all of the DBA's I know are pretty damn intelligent (in the fact that they make big bucks for doing no strenous work)

It had to be something else. It happened with the screen buttons, and also with

I'll see if I can;t effect some change in the industry, but I'll settle for keeping you all laughing.

[vpFREE] Gambling With an Edge April 14th
We'll be having in the studio Al Mancici and Max Jacobson, two of the authors of Eating Las Vegas.
Bob thinks this is off topic for our show on gambling. I'm of the mind that where to get the most value for your comp dollar is on topic. If you have an opinion please email us as gamblingwithanedge@gmail.com. I'd love to know what our listeners think. Ultimately your opinion is far more important than ours.
We'll also be talking about Type III errors. The infamous "didn't see it" problem that most VP players face. It's one of the most costly issues and the hardest to treat.

[vpFREE] Re: $2,478.25 royal on .25 progresives!!!!!!!!!!
Then like Rosanna Rosanna Danna, let me say, "Never Mind".
$2,478.25 just seemed awful low to be playing a quarter. If he had all those perks it was a good play.
I've only played about 4 quarter progressives this year, but they were all well over $4,000.
I thought my errant post sparked a good thread topic. See previous posts. I think my other problem is that I'm too worried about the negative aspects of gambling to account for anyone doing it "For Fun".
Oh and please feel free to pick. I probably deserve it.

The guy said he was at an Indian joint, hence no FPDW. He also said he was getting double points, also hence that was worth .5%. Even more hence, I'm pretty sure I know where he is talking about and they have some bounceback. I wrote to this gentleman to ask, but have not heard back from him yet. If it's the place I think it is, I play there once in awhile too. The thing is, on those same machines there is 7-5 Bonus Poker. (7-5, Frank, not 5-7) I'd play that for a better return any day. I hope this gentleman writes me back. I'm anxious to ask him about this.
And Frank, I'm only picking on you because you're my idol. You and Micky both are my idols. I'd pick on him too, but he might kick my ass.
