[vpFREE] Things to remember on or booking cruises

1. When booking ask how long the beds are if u are over 5'7. I'm that height and typing in an nCl bed right now on Gem that is barely long enough for me with pillows for my head if I don't want head to hit wall.

2. If handicapped make SURE room is handicapped and large enough for u to turn your scooter to turn around if needed to get into shower on it (more on this when I get home).

3 banana or tutti fruit smoothies on NCL are delicious but probably 1000 calories (made with ice cream mix). Bring an extra size of clothing if u start to order them onboard (they are addicting and can be with or without booze).

4. Take your own alarm clock device, cause wake up calls may be off by an hour in hotel rooms or cruise

5. Ask cruise line before trip if announcements can be turned off or on in your room or if they will be in the hall outside your door. Be prepared for the latter at volumes guaranteed to wake the dead starting about a half hour before any port, and don't plan to sleep in. Napping won't work either because of announcements anytime before 8 pm to inform you over and over of stuff u already know about. Apparently cruise lines believe passengers cannot read (the daily newsletter) or hear (thus the loud announcements and sometimes overly loud music in some rooms).

6. Do not expect to understand the international crew including the Emcees, head of hotel, your steward, host of trivia or anyone. But some will be understandable, just don't expect it. Don't expect to hear singers without a Fillipino accent (though there may be some...). Filipinos doing US country accents are notable (u can choose if it is notably good or bad).

7. Expect the tightest machines you have ever seen in the casino.

8. Expect to eat until u feel sick, but u will continue to eat and when u go home u will feel like a drug addict craving drugs when u don't get your six course breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

9. If booking a room for 3 or more people make sure your extra people can climb a ladder into a bunk bed and check with hotel that the bunk bed isn't directly over the head of person under (about 3 inches over lower head).

Not the same article but covers most of the same ground... one would think one of the editors at Wired might have noticed the overlap.

Yes... one of the two guys discussed in the article was from Pittsburgh and played at the Meadows. The other was a LV resident.

nordo wrote: nightoftheiguna wants a 2% slot club. Sorry night, no way. When I started playing video poker 1% cash back was not uncommon. Now you're very lucky to get 1/3% free play.

NOTI is correct on this one, although he might be using "cash back" a bit loosely. Let's say a casino awarded you $5,000 appearance money and is expecting you to play $250,000 through the "definitely less than 99%" machines. This 2% arrangement would be enough to make 9/5 Jacks very playable --- 8/5 Jacks not so much (unless you also received substantial extra goodies --- which is possible). Calling that "cash back" is not such a stretch.

Is such a deal available 24/7 at your local casino for quarter players? Of course not. Is it available for higher-stake players on occasion? Absolutely!

An angry poker player or an informant who works at the casino fingered them.   This is a scam to raise revenue by states.

[vpFREE] Re: [harrahscasinos] Markers

This isn't a problem with markers per se. It's a Harrah's procedural problem. I have been using markers for a lot of years and I have never had a problem.

I always thought using casino credit and taking a marker was the safest way to deal with avoiding taking large sums of cash on vacation. Here's my horror story.
I had $2,200 in my gambling checking account last month. I happened to check the balance online 2 weeks ago and my balance read -$2,800! What?! I ran over to my bank and they told me that a check is currently processing for $5,000 from Harrah's Philadelphia. Nothing can be done until it processes fully on the next business day. What? 3 Reasons that something is very wrong here: 1) I haven't taken a marker from Harrah's Philadelphia since last April, 2) I only have a $3,000 credit limit, and 3) I only take markers at $1,000 or less.
     I call Harrah's Philadelphia.
Evidently, someone else took a marker for $5,000. They use the same bank as I do…a small bank in the area…and whoever put the marker through put it through on MY account.
     I go to Harrah's Philadelphia.
They appologize up and down. "This has never happened before." "We'll cover all banking costs you incure." "Here, have $100 in free play for your inconvenience." I see a copy of the check. Not my name, not my signature, but definitely my account number on the check.
The next business day my bank returns the check to Harrah's Philadelphia. I have already talked with the credit department. The matter should be closed.
No. Harrah's bank refuses to take the check back and 2 days later I am called by my bank's manager. "The check came back to us. I can send it back again, but if they refuse it again you will be responsible for the $5,000 and will have to get it back from Harrah's Philadelphia." Nice (sarcastic inflection).
I call Harrah's Philadelphia. I tell them they better get their shit together with their bank so that the check doesn't come back. It's been 5 days and so far it looks good. My bank manager said give it another 3 days to be sure.
So that's my horror story. If the marker was only for $1,000 I may have missed it. Never again. All account numbers have been changed and I will watch markers like a hawk.
Stu

RE: [vpFREE] Re: Proper hold JOB 3 card royal vs. 4 card flush?????

scountgr8 commented to my suggestion that I would take up bowling: How about racquetball?

Full disclosure: 18-or-so years ago I played racquetball with countgr8 and Anthony Curtis. I was the weakest player. After a month or so, my knee gave out and I limped around for 4 months. After healing for six months or so I tried again. Played okay for a couple of weeks, and then my knee gave out again.

Shirley wanted to kill all three of us!

So, no, I'm not considering playing racquetball again. As fragile as my body was in my early 50s, taking up the game again in my late 60s isn't attractive in the least.
