Re: [vpFREE] Return on reversible royal progressive

For 9-6DDB a reversible 50000 coin royal raises the game from 98.98% to 99.45% with correct strategy adjustments.

The simple way is to assume that 1 out of 60 royals will hit the
progressive and then average the royals. This will somewhat
underestimate the value because of not incorporating strategy changes,
but it will usually be close.

[vpFREE] Re: Online Gambling Software Cheating??

More scum of the earth cheaters. No punishment is too light for them. Does this player have any legal recourse? My brain would be exploding out of my head had this happened to me. Steam everywhere! What took this player so long to realize he was being cheated however? If this was happening to me I would be highly suspicious after 50 non trips or better hands and totally convinced I was being cheated after 100 such hands. I have tried to warn everyone on this site that cheating was possible and that there were so many ways of being cheated. It happened in the past and is almost certain to happen again. Why do they cheat? Because they can!! I just hope they all go to hell.

Those were never considered full pay. They were always considered to be much better. By definition full pay means the best commonly available pay schedule.

I can remember when full pay jacks or better was a 100% plus game at Vegas World. They offered both 10/6 and 9/7, ahh those were the days.

I think Jean's use of the term skilled player is too broad. If you don't know that full pay Jacks or better isn't a 100% game you are not a skilled player.
I'd probably use the term slightly educated player. I'd call a skilled player someone with the same basic skills as the advantage player, but plays in situations that are below 100% because of all the other benefits that he/she may be getting. That's the category where I place myself.

[vpFREE] Online Gambling Software Cheating??

A business associate, with whom I gave an interview in the past, has published an article on a US software provider that he has caught rigging their games - http://thepogg.com/skybook-cheating-video-poker-amigotechs-software/. He said, " It's actually likely to be all their games, but we caught them on VP."

I don't know how many here play online, but although I don't, I thought I needed to give this warning.

I can remember when full pay jacks or better was a 100% plus game at Vegas World. They offered both 10/6 and 9/7, ahh those were the days.

I'd probably use the term slightly educated player. I'd call a skilled player someone with the same basic skills as the advantage player, but plays in situations that are below 100% because of all the other benefits that he/she may be getting. That's the category where I place myself.

Re: [vpFREE] Re: why CE is better than EV

People keep saying "go for the max EV, that's what Bob dancer would do." I don't know about you, but I don't have a huge bankroll where I can pound out razor-thing edges with high variance.

The point is, if you have a huge BR, then go for the maxEV play (because it'll be the same as the CE play). If you have a small BR, then go for the CE play.

You already know it's not proper to over bet your BR....so why hold the 222 on a small BR?

PS: Glad to see you're using CE properly. I knew a guy who tried to argue that when you're ahead a good amount on a session that you should quit, because of "CE".

True. A degenerate gambler would take a gamble even if the EV was less than the guaranteed amount, and a totally risk averse person would never gamble and would always take the guaranteed amount. You see this at drawings where the prize is say $1000 freeplay or $100 cash and many people take the cash.

I should have specified the Kelly CE, which is approximately EV - Variance/Bankroll/2. Kelly made certain assumptions to derive his CE, so if you disagree with his assumptions you would probably disagree with his approximation for CE.

Re: [vpFREE] Progressive return

Thanks for the reply. This is kind of what I expected and I think for my own purposes unless I am playing a long session I will care more about the current meter. For example if NSUD is available and 9/6 JoB with a 0.25% meter is available but the meter has just reset and I am only going to play for a little bit then it seems right to opt for NSUD (disregarding variance/bankroll concerns).

And yes, I agree you definitely still get a benefit if you don't commit to hitting it and instead play for a certain amount of time or coin-in. One way is that you might actually hit it and the other way is that there's no guarantee someone else will hit it before you come back. I think it it is impossible to quantify the EV gain from the latter, though.

I also agree that when you commit to play until it hits, then the competition increasing reduces your EV on multi-machine progressives. My example assumed the players started at the same time but if they don't then the first player will have more of a contribution to the meter and any additional players that sit down now have the same chances of hitting. Interesting observation.

[vpFREE] Re: why CE is better than EV

Just what is the Certainty Equivalent (CE)?

I have searched for definitions, and here's what I found:

1) Certainty Equivalent: A guaranteed return that someone would accept,
rather than taking a chance on a higher, but uncertain, return.

2) The amount of payoff that a player would have to receive to be
indifferent between that payoff and a given gamble is called that
gamble's 'certainty equivalent.'

Note the references to "someone" and "a player." Thus, the CE is a
subjective measure, and the CE for a given play is likely to be
different for you than it is for me or anyone else.

To actually come up with a meaningful value for CE for a play requires
each player to somehow quantize his/her emotional tolerance of Risk. I
don't know how to do that. Before using CE, I suggest someone should
come up with some way to assign a number to one's emotional tolerance of
risk.

The first example used for this thread was dealt 22266 in FPDW. Even
though the EV of holding just the deuces is slightly greater than the
value of the quints, I have always recommended always holding the
quints. This falls in nicely in my definition of Optimum Play.

Only a dedicated pro with a large bankroll should discard the 66.
