BS ... don't overlook Ms_vpFREE's excellent comments in reply to you. If I recall correctly, the Dancer article to which she links cites the 5K w/ 1D as contributing .05% in the COD example he cites.

Nudge, I think you are misreading the Wizard's line 13. He does say hold one pair with a kicker but as the examples show, he means along with the pair, hold two cards which together could result in a QQ. The term kicker as he is using it is a little misleading, since we usually think of it as being one card. The hands where a single card kicker is held are covered in line 22.
Hask
----------------------------------------------------------
Thanks, Hask. As I studied and compared the two authors versions of the strategies, I came to the same conclusion. However, just to be clear here, I did not misread anything. In Rocky Mount, where I come from, what Mr. Shackelford typed on his site is just plain wrong, not misleading. If I read a sentence in a book that clearly states " The dog is brown " and you ask me what I have just read and I tell you that the line that I read stated that " The dog is
black ", then I have misread the line. That is not the case. Among other differences that I spotted, the Dancer/Richards report says an Ace is more valuable than an unsuited JK, and the Wizard says exactly the opposite. In their updated version of the game available here:
http://www.videopoker.com/insideScoop/strategy/docs/qq/9-6%20Jacks%20or%20Better%20QQ%20Strategy.pdf ,
the Dancer/Richards method shows TA suited as a viable hold and the Wizard's chart does not. If what the Wizard meant to say on line 13 was, hold two kickers, then that is what he should have said. One also has to be able to decipher the difference in meaning between a forward slash and a comma when used in separating cards. Plus, as time went by and most players referred to this type of hand as quick trips, his website could have been proofread and corrected then, and the term quick trips added for clarity. I would think that all of our members here would have hope that our appointed "gurus" should at least agree on a strategy for a specific game. On websites that they represent, these strategies are available for free, but lets face it, they are all trying to sell you product on the sites. This is how they make money. In the past, when I see a topic that I think I may have experience and or expertise in, I have recommended changes to an existing strategy in order to play a different game. I have commented on why strategies for similar games are different. I have made extensive posts on strike numbers for a number of different progressive games. Since I have no desire to make money for sharing what I think may be valuable information to some, I am not that concerned if I make an error here and there. I can safely drag up the old adage, you get what you pay for. Please don't misinterpret what I just stated, as I have nothing against anyone making money from internet commerce, and I can say that I consider Bob Dancer as a friend, but I think that anyone in the gaming business, even when they offer something for free, should be a little more adept at a task than they seemed to be in this one. Bottom line, at least for me, I'm going back to my original decision from a couple years back of avoiding the quick quad games. Until software exists that can be used to check and verify as we do on most other games, the marginal gains that are offered on the QQ games just don't seem to be worth the extra volatility that comes with that extra coin bonus purchase. Just my two cents—err aah, ok 25 cents.

[vpFREE] Re: London
There is random draw video poker in the UK in our race and sports "betting shops". They are ubiqutous in all UK cities; the main companies include: Ladbrokes; Coral; Wiliam Hill; and Bet Fred.
The best game I have found is a 1-coin (50p or £1) Jacks variant with the following pay table:
Royal Flush 500
Straight Flush 50
4 of a KIND 23
Full House 9
Flush 5
Straight 4
3 of a KIND 3
2 Pair 2
Jacks or Better 1
This is a 97.26% game but it also has a double-up option.

One thing to note, some of these casinos have dress codes higher than we are used to, such as no shorts or sandals or even no tennis shoes. I was turned away from a casino in Netherlands once for tennis shoes. Check before going.

Thanks Frank K. for pointing out that FVP can pull out Natural Quads on Deuces style games.
Thanks Harry P. for plugging in the changes on FVP to give the frequency of Natural Quads on Deuces style games. Also thanks for realizing that Dean Zamzow's Winpoker (optimized with Tom Ski's help) is my only VP analyzer available to me.
The remaining question is if a Five of a Kind with one Deuce qualifies for the Bonus payoff on the Bally Gamemakers in Sassy Sue's Saloon bartops in the Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall on the Colorado River in Laughlin. That will take some on-site research to answer this unknown.
The promotion is called "Beat the Deck" with details on the Pioneer website or the Laughlin Entertainer weekly magazine website. It is a low roller quarter play, which I am one.

[vpFREE] Re: XVP- Casino gifts
One thing that I have learned, after reading the messages on this group for a few years, is that sometimes folks make assumptions that may not be true.
No disrespect to you, Pumsparky, but I do need a bankroll. It determines what denoms and games I play. My goal is to move up (someday) from quarters. I am handicapped, and advantage VP play has helped financially.
I have won some nice things by being lucky, and not based on my coin-in.
I thank the people who answered my direct question.

It seems like an internal clock on the chip drives the streaks. I play mostly .25 Triple Double on multi-game machines. Anyone else notice this? A whole bank of the same machines seem to hit at once, then stops paying.

Some folks think RANDOM implies UNIFORM (CYCLE). Nope.
We are starting with one of 2.5 million plus, sets of five cards on the deal, in any order you want, it usually doesn't matter, then getting to draw from the rest of the 47 (or more) cards left in the deck. That is a lot of possibilities!
Clumps Happen randomly, given a criteria...for the good or bad...a random event.

Subject: [vpFREE] California Dreamin'
Hi Gang:
Once again, it has became crystal clear to Hedy and me that our video
poker careers can be summed up in one simple phrase: "When you're hot,
you're
hot ... and when you're not, you're not."
And right now, we are sizzling hot!
We returned from a Valentine's weekend trip to Harrah's Rincon on Sunday
where we once again were able to line our pockets with Harrah's greenbacks
after a rousing run of good luck on some games we hardly ever play.
It all began Thursday when we flew into San Diego on an offer that
included free airfare from Newark, transportation to and from San Diego, a
welcome
reception at Pink's Restaurant, three nights in a suite and a day trip to
Seaport Village in San Diego. We were traveling with two friends from AC,
Marcia and Frank, which made it even more fun for us.
Upon arrival, we availed ourselves of the hot dog/hamburger fare at Pink's
then settled into our older, but spacious, suite before locating the 25
machines in the video poker cove that offer 9/6 JOB, 8/5 BP and 9/6 DDB in
various denominations.
We began playing our game of choice, $1 DDB, and almost immediately I
found success. I hit aces (without a kicker) for $800 twice in the first 15
minutes of play and soon after nailed queens and jacks for $250 each. Hedy
couldn't get anything going on DDB and switched to one of the new Double
Super
Times Pay machines that randomly provides multipliers both before and
after the draw. She hit aces a couple of times for $200 each and fours with
a
kicker for $400 but that was about it. Everything seemed to go cold after
that and we found ourselves down a couple of hundred dollars after Day One.
Day Two started slowly, but just before lunch I hit treys with a kicker
for $800 and things started to take off from there. Hedy was playing her STP
machine and got dealt fours on triple play. She hit two kickers for $400
each and was holding her own playing this wildly volatile game.
I noticed two Dream Card machines against the back wall and decided to
take a shot. I was playing deuces wild (triple play quarters) and it seemed
that I was getting the Dream Card just about every hand.
After a about a half hour, I was dealt three royal cards and a deuce in
the first four spots, then the Dream Card came up, another deuce, giving me
a
dealt wild royal. The wild royal only paid 100 coins, but the 300-coin
payoff kept me going for awhile. I was getting the Dream Card deuce so many
times I became used to seeing it pop up time after time. Then, suddenly, I
was dealt Q-10-J-K of spades in the first four spots and the Dream Card
symbol came up again.
"Oh, I thought, another deuce. I'll have another wild royal dealt. Cool."
I was so conditioned to seeing a deuce as the Dream Card that's what I was
expecting. Of, course, the Dream Card (the best possible card) in this
instance was the ace of spades, giving me a dealt NATURAL royal for
$3,000!!!
Oh, my God. I was shocked to see it, but mighty glad it was there. Later
that night, Hedy hit aces with a kicker on $1 DDB for another hand pay
($2,000) and we were off and running. That night we had a wonderful dinner
with
Mike Connerley and his wife Susan in the buffet and were excited to see him
hit a royal later that night.
Saturday, Day Three, was our day for the trip to Seaport Village (the bus
left at 10 a.m.), so we played a little after breakfast on the two Dream
Card machines. Hedy, of course, played DDB triple play and had an amazing
run
with aces. She hit them four times, including once with a kicker for $500.
She also got treys dealt (getting no kickers on the draw) for another $300.
Our trip to San Diego was very nice. The weather was perfect (clear blue
skies with temperatures in the high 70's) and we spent three hours or so
exploring the quaint shops and restaurants in Seaport Village. It proved to
be
a nice, relaxing afternoon. When we returned to Harrah's we ate an early
dinner and had a couple of hours to kill before going to a show that night
which featured Dick Cavett interviewing Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.
I was pretty much finished playing so I sat next to Hedy and cheered her
on as she played her DDB on the Dream Card machine. She was holding her own,
getting a bonus quad now and then, when suddenly, she was dealt A-A-A-A in
the first four spots and the Dream Card symbol came up! We knew it was
going to be a kicker and sure enough, a four of clubs popped onto her screen
and we had our third hand pay of the trip, $1,500 for the dealt aces with a
kicker!!
She added dealt fours a little later for another $300 and we called it a
night and went to see the show. Our trip resulted in another healthy,
four-figure win and kept alive our recent hot streak.
Some other random thoughts about Harrah's Rincon:
1) The buffet, which was above average, offers one free meal per day for
Seven Stars players and a guest. So, since Hedy and I are both Seven Stars,
we had two free meals a day which just about took care of our food costs
for the weekend. Diamond players get $10 off their meal. We also ate one
breakfast in the coffee shop, which was very good. We didn't get a chance to
try
any of the gourmet restaurants.
2) The alcove where the good VP machines are is set in the back of the
casino and has a low ceiling, making it very smoky in that area. Hedy and I
are both non-smokers, so this was problematic.
3) The property is on an Indian Reservation and pretty much in the middle
of nowhere but there are three or four other casinos within driving
distance if you rent a car. There's no place nearby to walk to so you're
pretty
much restricted to the casino area. There is a very nice outdoor pool on
property, however.
4) The bus/limo ride from San Diego takes about an hour and 10 minutes.
Not too bad, although the last part of the ride is pretty boring.
5) Seven Stars players get a $50 media credit per day, which takes into
account internet and movie charges, more than enough to cover internet and
couple of movies per day.
6) The host who was very helpful to us was named Donna Schulz.
7) The Diamond Lounge was about as bare bones as you can get. Soft drinks,
popcorn machine and some baked goodies served. Not much seating either.
8) We received zero bonus points for all our play.
Regards,
CoachVee & Hedy
PS: An added treat was a surprise visit from Tom and Jo, who are friends
from back East who now live and work in California, about an hour from
Rincon.
