Re: [vpFREE] saw everything in Vegas till 2007- what should i see now?

A really nice casino that my husband and I enjoy is Sun Coast. It is pretty far from the strip but it has a good atmosphere, free rooms and food are easy to get, some good pays if you play video poker. I also think Red Rock and Green Valley have some good plays and we get room offers with not a lot of coin in. Sun Coast has a movie theatre. Last trip I got my ticket, popcorn and a drink for free. Their buffet is not bad but not the best except they have a good bread pudding. We always get a large room with a view of the golf course. They have a nice, not very big but heated swimming pool.

If you mean the 100% payback machines, forget about it. If you mean the "Up to 99.8%" machines with games like NSUD, I doubt you'll get any comped weekend rooms from a host that stay.

But if you play any other video poker machines with 8/5 BP or worse, you might get comped rooms if you have a big loss, high coin-in and a very low balance on your points. (They tell you to use your points if you have much of a point balance.)

You'll have more success getting comped rooms if you wait for future offers.

Re: [vpFREE] Bob Dancer's LVA - 14 JUL 2015

The major "uncertainty" in video poker is the play error rate caused by strategy mistakes (making the wrong hold) and by machine issues such as sticky buttons or bad lighting causing a misread of the cards particularly the distinction between spades and clubs. But there are also some minor "uncertainties", such as getting robbed or cheated or the "uncertainties" of spending time in a high crime environment or the "uncertainties" of long term effects on health from second hand smoke and sitting and staring at a poorly lit computer screen for long periods of time.

If there were no "uncertainties" in video poker, it would be mathematically correct to always bet as close as possible to the optimal Kelly fraction of your bankroll, however, because there are "uncertainties" in video poker, it's safer to bet less than the optimal Kelly fraction to provide some guardband for the "unknown unknowns". Exactly how much guardband to choose has always been somewhat of an art.

Re: [vpFREE] Bob Dancer's LVA - 14 JUL 2015

A very interesting and thought-provoking column, Bob. Working from, and capitalizing on, one's strength is usually the best course to follow.

You mentioned paying an adviser to manage your investments because that's not your area of expertise - a wise decision in almost all cases. A reputable adviser can do much to lower the inherent risk in your portfolio while maximizing the opportunity to earn profits, but perhaps the most important function of a good adviser is to prevent investors from making dumb mistakes. Having spent my career in the investment business, hiring an adviser is not for me - that would be like you having someone tell you what to hold on a VP hand ; )
But speaking of risk and uncertainty, your points about playing in profitable situations, and for an appropriate percentage of your available bankroll, are exactly what an investment adviser does with a portfolio: spreading risk among various asset classes actually lowers the overall risk of the portfolio, depending on the correlation of returns among the various assets and by using a number of assets each represents only a portion of the whole portfolio.
On the other hand, like you, knowing where the oil drain plug is is something I leave to someone else, and as far as gourmet goes, if it can't be grilled on my BBQ, that's also someone else's wheelhouse.
Certainly the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you; if you don't bet, you can't win. -Lazarus Long
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is. -Yogi Berra
There is no such thing as luck. There is only adequate or inadequate preparation to cope with a statistical universe. -Robert Heinlein
