I'm referring to serious weight loss, not 15 pounds. Every person that I know who has lost weight from a bet has put almost all if not more back on once the bet was over. Losing weight is not a one time event.
Bob talks about losing weight as if it's a game to be mastered.
I think that he is wrong for a number of reasons.
Aside from a few minor differences all of the strategies for any specific game of video poker are the same.
You learn them well and you are now a skilled video poker player.
People are not that consistent. We have different builds, metabolisms, lifestyles, etc. etc.
There is no simple method for losing weight and keeping it off. You need an expert.
Virtually anyone can master video poker if they want to put in a modicum of work. It takes a lot more to lose weight.
He should have compared losing weight to playing poker as a more apt comparison.
Very few people can become professional level poker players. It's a lot easier to play video poker, because there is no human element involved. it's just you and a paytable.
Over my life I have lost hundreds of pounds. I don't profess to be an expert in how to lose weight, but I am highly experienced in how not to lose weight, and some book on the latest fad, or a bet amongst friends is how not to lose weight.
I respect you and Dancer as experts in your fields. You should stick to your branches of expertise.
Regards
A.P.

Albert, losing weight and keeping it off is difficult no matter what the approach. You dismiss Dancer's column as bullshit and present your own two-point program as if it is radically different than Dancer's column. It's not. Your first item is exactly the theme of Dancer's column: That weight loss takes the same kind of discipline as being a good video poker player. Was it simply the bet you didn't like?
In 2003 I was inching steadily away from a healthy BMI. I made a bet with my adult nephew on who would lose 15 lbs first. The loser would have to either pay the winner $1000 or come across country to visit within 3 months. (Texas/Northeast) We had to weigh in and report it every week, and even bought identical scales for the weigh-ins.
My nephew and I are both pretty competitive in general, and with each other in particular. The bet worked like a charm for me. I plotted progress on an Excel chart and won the bet in about 2.5 months. 12 years later I'm still 12 lbs under the starting weight of that bet. The bet helped jump-start my motivation and the weekly weigh-ins helped me stay focused on the program.

Read a book and become healthy..
Bullshit.
Make a bet and lose weight
Way more bullshit, and an almost absolute guarantee that you will gain it all back as soon as the bet has been resolved. A perfect recipe for yo-yo dieting.
Stick to video poker Bob..
Losing weight requires two things.
1. Absolute dedication to the diet you are on. You have to diet the same way that Dancer plays VP. Absolutely perfect, or as close as is reasonable.
2. Getting a diet that is sustainable. My suggestion, spend some money and see a consulting nutritionist/dietician, who can prescribe a diet that is tailored to your needs, lifestyle etc. That's what I have done after doing all of the other foolishness for more years than I can count.
