Bev and I witnessed a couple playing at Atlantis in Reno with face shields. I was surprised they were considered compliant.
I thoroughly understand the discomfort posed by a mask. Even the most comfortably fitted mask causes a build up of moisture and imposes an added pressure gradient when breathing. Even modestly impaired respiration is significantly handicapped with the addition of a mask.
It's important to understand that the recommendation to wear a mask is most directed at the goal of preventing the spray of saliva/mucus droplets into the surrounding air. The efficacy of face shields (having edges open to the environment) hasn't been sufficiently evaluated for the CDC to include them as recommended wear.
The personal protection afforded by a mask/shield is considered secondary to spray prevention. As a protective device, face shields are superior to most masks, in providing eye protection as well as full face coverage. They're also less likely to prompt periodic hand adjustment for comfort, something that increases a mask wearer's exposure with each adjustment.
I can only remark that while I truly understand your preference for a face shield, please understand that any establishment that would refuse admission for wearing one without a face mask is adhering to CDC general guidance. (Because of the political atmosphere surrounding mask mandates, I'm not aware if the CDC has issued any guidelines firmer than "recommendations" to businesses.)
--> Just as an aside, while I know nothing about your search for "breathable" masks, athletes (pro and am) have desired protection when running outside from allergens/pollutants for ages and have come up with recommendations for masks that enhance breath-ability. One such website: https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2020/06/9884004/breathable-face-mask-for-running displays a side-show of some recommended alternatives.
I'll also offer up this Consumer Reports article that I think has a good overview of mask fabric sensibilities: https://www.consumerreports.org/coronavirus/how-to-choose-and-wear-a-mask-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic/

I'm headed out in a couple of days for my second casino trip since I went on "hiatus" in October, braving the turf of Tunica/Biloxi this week. I believe I noted some trepidation in heading to Reno a couple weeks ago. I'm not sure how to describe my mix of emotions in advance of this trip. But some birthday promos are calling; I'm prepared to saddle up with alcohol gel/wipes/mask in hand and sally forth!

My husband and I were in Las Vegas from June 24th to June 30th. We stayed at Red Rock. They checked temperatures every time we entered and they required a face covering. We went to Caesars one afternoon and there was no temperature check but they were requiring masks. We both wore face shields as we are in our 70's and have difficulty breathing with the mask. We were told we had to wear a mask so we left. We had no problems anywhere else with the face shields even the airports (Louisville, Denver, McCarran & Chicago Midway) or on the planes. We decided to skip going downtown and we did not visit any other casinos on the Strip. We did eat at Peppermill and stopped at Rio but it was still closed. Our 14 days since arriving back home will be this Tuesday or Wednesday. We did stop by Sun Coast/ They were checking temperatures and required a face covering. Had a great trip, really enjoyed it.

I have a lot of respect for your posts Harry, but I don't understand your statement "a clear sign that a lot of operators f'd up the re-openings." You seem to think the surge came from activity in casinos. Is there anyway to verify that? I don't think there is and as a tourist who was there June 25th thru the 29th, who has now made it through 13 days with no symptoms, I am of the belief things were well managed in the casinos. Heck, in my experience, they were over the top with some ways- I couldn't watch my friend play craps from a distance. I was basically threatened by a floor supervisor to move along. If the surge did come from casino activity, wouldn't most of those folks, assuming they were tourists like me, have brought home their positive tests, not record them in Nevada? It sure seemed to be a lot of other tourists where I was. In my opinion the only questionable place was Fremont Street, so we got out of there quickly. And that had to be more than just tourists.
I tend to think the surge is likely from the same thing it is/was in other locales where there are issues- people flooded to restaurants, stores, etc. and failed to be careful, thinking they could go back to behaving pre-covid and be fine. Asymptomatic folks passed it along. But perhaps I am wrong and casinos are the reason for the surges in Nevada. And also Florida, Texas and California. And in Nashville where live. Oh,wait, no casinos here or in Texas.
Just my .02.
Thanks, Lee.
