Re: [vpFREE] Re: NCL warning

I'm not surprised to hear of their greed.  On the last night of our cruise, we were told they would leave at 12:00.  I didn't want to cut it so close, but we got back to where the ship was by 11:40, only to watch it sail away.  They refused to reimburse us for the hotel, different flight, etc.

After one voyage on NCL I declined any further ones even when my friend wanted to pay.  It is the worst, crappiest, greediest line.  Not one lecture other than shore shopping ones.  The worst food.  Had to pay for anything above room and board.  No thanks!

Re: [vpFREE] Possible tax changes

From what I've read your source is wrong. As I read it in NYT, the change is that for professional filers, gambling expenses (i.e., travel, etc.) will be added to gambling losses and then deducted from wins. The main effect being that professional filers won't be able to deduct expenses in excess of net win.

They're increasing the standard deduction, though, so the change will probably indirectly have a negative effect on non-professional filers.

I'm not even remotely a tax expert though.

An acquaintance of mine, who happens to play VP at a high level of skill, told me something yesterday.

I did not confirm this, so it may be totally false.  However, if what he said is true, all gamblers need to be aware of the changes that may be coming.

According to this acquaintance, gamblers will no longer be allowed to deduct losses on their taxes.  i.e. the deduction for gambling losses will be eliminated.  This might happen as early as 2018.   This is all part of the new tax proposal that is underway.

According to this source, this will not affect the ability to offset losses for those who file as a professional gambler.and is restricted to a change in how one itemizes   Such losses would still be allowed as business expenses.

If anyone here knows more, please comment.

I know there are probably many people here who might be negatively impacted by these changes if they are enacted.

At a minimum, I suggest all gamblers who anticipate creating W2G events will want to pay attention to this situation and think about its impact before making any bets in 2018.

Or.... My acquaintance is totally wrong.  I sure hope that is the case.

[vpFREE] : NCL warning

When we got off the ship I checked uber fares.  $30 to Miami airport.  Free if you rent a car and take the rental car shuttle van. Why would anyone pay for ncl transfers?  We stayed at Days Inn before the cruise, since they provided free transfers to the port of miami.  The transfer service was so late we gave up after an hour of waiting and took uber.   $13.  Very easy. Got on the sjip right away with almost no wait.

I thought the cruise was fine.  Bad weather the first few days made the decks clear.  We had no lines for anything.  But we are not early risers.  Easy to find seating at the buffet each morning.  Gym on the Escape is awesome.  Shows were entertaining.  Casino was super smoky so we did not spend too much time there.  Coughing fits if you spend too much time at the horrible paytable machines.  We had been to the ports many times so the ship was the main focus of our trip.  We did not care that bad weather made us skip Jamaica, or dock far from town at Grand Cayman. TV movies were oldies but goodies.  Did not repeat as often as in the past.  All on all a good cruise.
