I totally agree with you about NEVER tipping for anything under $1200.
One time I was at a casino that had 9/6 Bonus Deluxe at $1 single line and every time I got a quad, it was a hand pay.... for $400....
the first one, it took about 5 min to get paid... the second, about 10 min.... the 3rd took about 20 min.... I forget how many I got in about 1 - 2 hours, but I basically ended up tying up 2-3 of the 4 machines because the slot person for my area pretty much refused to pay me at all. So I stopped playing and waited to get paid and left that casino.
I did track the person down and demanded to talk to the floor manager about the ridiculous situation the did not need to be.

Also, if I would have hit a royal, I would have been more generous about that tip, feeling somewhat guilty about not tipping for the quads.

[vpFREE] Re: Shootout at Las Vegas Blvd. and Flamingo Road

Review Journal has more details as of late Thusday:
http://www.lvrj.com/news/three-dead-after-shooting-leads-to-mutli-vehicle-accident-on-strip-192273091.html
"...A Maserati driven by Las Vegas rapper Kenneth Cherry, known as Kenny Clutch, was the target of a drive-by shooting on the Strip Thursday morning that left Cherry and two innocent bystanders dead..."

Incident brings to the spotlight need to be vigilant on VP trips.

Re: [vpFREE] Re: Tipping

Never have understood why I'm expected (by them) to tip a slot attendant.
I'm playing at best a 100% game; get a W2 so I can give some of the win
to the 47%. I wonder how much of the tips received is reported as
income???

[vpFREE] GWAE: What is a "Mystery Slot"?

I listened to the whole show, I still don't know what they're talking about. What the heck is a "mystery slot" or "mystery progressive" or whatever it was they were talking about? I seldom play slots, but I walk around and I'm pretty familiar with most of the slots, or what they look like. So what were they talking about? Can someone describe one or two of them for a poor dummy like me? What do they look like? What's the mystery?

Here's a thought.

Decide for yourself what YOU think is appropriate.

As for being called "cheap".... Do you really care?

If so, what does that say about you?

Personally, if I catch wind of such nonsense, all
tipping to that person will cease immediately.

You are there to make money. (I assume) and you
do not owe them a dime. Tipping can be +EV for
play preservation. You may simply want to do it.
But please don't let some tool tell you what you

[vpFREE] Daily Theo vs Quarterly Action

Perhaps this has been broken down before, but I haven't found it. Is there a comprehensive list of which casinos use which methods for their decision making?

Harrah's properties definitely use daily Theo, with weighting on your most recent sessions (I've had people say they only look at last four, I've had people say they look at ten but weight toward the most recent).

The VPFree pages for some casinos, including the Nugget in Reno, suggest that decisions are made entirely on total action during a calendar period (in the Nugget's case a calendar quarter) without regard to the daily averages.

Perhaps there are some that use both, with quarterly action deciding mailers but daily theo deciding room discounts or comps. For those of you who run $100k coin in every time through the door, perhaps it doesn't matter. But some of us have $40k days and $5k days, or days where we spend an hour as a one-off while waiting on friends. Putting up a short day at Harrah's definitely has its downsides...

Re: [vpFREE] Re: Irresponsible Journalists - Maureen O'Connor

Sure it's potentially "defensible". There's evidence some people, due to a
specific chemical imbalance, really can't
control themselves, i.e. Parkinson's patients being treated with a certain
drug and then becoming crazed gambling
maniacs (a documented phenomenon).

I never never play at an open bar if the same game is available at another location in the casino. Unfortunately some slot managers don't always provide me that option. Should I not play these machines if my level of dehydration does not meet or exceed the bartender's expectations?

[vpFREE] Re: Tipping

I appreciate the input re: tipping after a jackpot. In general, I agree with Barry Glazer's points.

I'm usually a fairly generous tipper for services I receive.

Tipping for drinks: I always keep something liquid near me while playing bartops, and always tip a minimum of $1 per drink - sometimes a little more if the bartender is particularly attentive or helpful. When I've hit jackpots, the system automatically sends a call for a hand pay person, and the bartender has no role in the process. Even if s/he had to call the hand pay person, I'd see that role as inconsequential, and not warranting a tip resulting from the jackpot. I may (and sometimes have) leave a little larger tip when I leave the machine if I'm feeling particularly good about the jackpot, but it honestly doesn't even occur to me to tip the bartender for a jackpot hand pay, since no extra service was received.

Hand pay people: I just got back from Reno and had a bit of experience with that. When I hit a royal on a $ machine, I tipped the hand pay people $30. I think $20 would be enough but I had hit four deuces three times prior. SOME (not all) machines at the Atlantis (including the Sports Bar machines) require a hand pay for $1,000 jackpots. While hand pay is necessary for jackpots over $1200 in order to complete and "serve" a W-2G, I can see no reason for requiring a hand pay on a quad deuce $1000 hit - other than to create an artificial opportunity for tips for the hand pay people. I therefore did not give the hand pay people tips for any of the hand pays on deuces. I felt guilty, but I think it's wrong to reinforce this kind of artificial opportunity for tips.

[vpFREE] Gambling with an Edge --- February 21, 2013

Tonight's Gambling with an Edge guest will be Peter Liston,
author of "Million Dollar Slots." Liston successfully plays slot progressives.

I'm someone who plays slot progressives so that my record
doesn't show I only play video poker. Winning players who play both slots and
video poker have a longer welcome-life in casinos than players who play video
poker only. Most casino managers believe that anyone who plays slots is a loser
so someone who plays them is not a threat to the casino's bottom line.

Gambling with an Edge airs Thursday evenings from 7-8,
Pacific Time, on radio station 1230 AM in Las Vegas or over the internet at www.klav1230am.com.

Re: [vpFREE] Re: Build-A-Wheel Poker

Cashing out one $1 slice is ~$75-95.
Slices will stay on the machine if you change denominations (finding
$2 slices on a $1/$2/$5 is $150-190/slice).
Only one set of slices for each denomination.

There are some people who choose to cash out without taking the cash
for the slice.
One lady who plays $1s told me about the first time she played when
she didn't cash her slices out.

A few days ago, someone hit 39,000+ on quarters (10,000 had built up
to almost 40,000).
Advantage play would depend on number of slices & level of
progressive...if anyone feels up to doing the math... :-)

[vpFREE] Re: Tipping

It was a pleasure to have a thread on Tipping that was useful.  My favorite place to play VP is the B Bar at Atlantic city Borgata. I am glad to see so many people agree with my tipping levels. I do tip more if i play in the evening when the bar is packed with people buying drinks.

Cheers,

Henry
