Re: [vpFREE] Video Poker tournament

In my experience with slot tournaments at Caesar owned establishments, you will play a regular slot machine for 10 minutes as fast as you can for either 2 or sometimes 3 sessions. Top scores win free play. Unless it is a video poker tournament then you will be playing vp. Good luck!

Re: [vpFREE] Re: The "tool box" for pros in 2014?

The most likely answer is the era of the advantage player specializing in one game is over, for it to be your sole source of income you must play multiple games such as blackjack and vp, or have another source of income as well. Yes Mr. Dancer specializes in vp, but he's also a writer and has software.

You answered your own question at least in part. Joining the players clubs will allow you to receive the slot club benefits you will need to be more profitable. You'll get bounceback free play, point multipliers, promotions and free or discounted food.

While you're waiting for Bob's Thursday radio show, read Jean Scott's recent five part blog "Can You Still Do It?". It addresses your questions. Here's Part 1 - http://jscott.lvablog.com/?p=3232

Although video poker is generally designed to be drawing to high
paying hands, anyway, when things get desperate in a tournament,
strategy can get crazy. Towards the end, with a poor score, it can
become obvious that a low pair is better than 2 pair and perhaps a ten
by itself is better than an open ended straight draw.

[vpFREE] RE: Video Poker tournament

These can vary quite a bit...I've played quite a few tourneys, and the games vary.  Often the pay tables are different from what you would normally see.

Not all of them are timed, but most are, so it usually pays to get in as many hands as possible.  Some have "pool" of credits that you must use or lose, and I always want to get in every possible play!

The math gurus may be able to give you better play strategy, but I always go for the best payoff in the short term.....not necessarily the best long term strategy.  For instance, I might hold A-10 suited, or hold a pair of face cards and drop a second pair, etc.

Ultimately, you might not see the game details with enough advance time to really prepare much.  I always avoid the early rounds, so that I can watch others and get a few minutes to study the pay table, as well as the machine's mechanical functioning.

No doubt there are better experts than me in this group, so perhaps one of them has advice that is more mathematically sound.  Good luck!

I played a VP tournament at PH about a year ago and the game was DDB (9/6 or 10/6, I don't recall) and the rounds were 10 or 15 minutes with unlimited hands.  I advise playing fast and going for the high-value hands.  You won't win a tournament going for inside straights.  Hold your Ace(s) and anything that might become a Royal.  Don't sweat the small stuff and hope for good deals.  In short sessions, you are really at the mercy of the (pseudo)RNG.  If you are driving, leave extra time to navigate the parking garage so you don't miss your session!

What game is usually played, what’s the best strategy, is it based on speed or number of hands, etc .etc.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As Howard Stern just mentioned in a different thread here, The Wizard of Odds site has info on Ultimate X and also simplified strategies.

Also you can play it for free on the videopoker.com site but there's no training available there on this game.

videopoker.com has "red light-green light" correction for several games --- including Quick Quads --- available to Gold Members, which is $8.95/mo or $79.95/yr.

funnyguy said: 'm new to VP but not advantage play. My background includes card counting, three card poker and I still do sports (arbitrage and props).

What does the current "tool box" look like for pros? Is it even still possible to do VP full time? So far I've been sharpening my FPDW at a Stations but there has to be greater EV out there than that.

I don't do coupons and I don't really do the players club (play unrated most of the time). I know I need to add these. But what else is there? Again, I'm assuming you can even do this full time any more.

FWIW, this is the exact subject I'll be addressing on this Thursday's Gambling with an Edge. 7-8 p.m. Vegas time 1230 AM in Vegas, www.klav1230am.com from anywhere. The show will be archived on bobdancer.com the day after the broadcast.
