[vpFREE] vpFREE

After investigating the alternatives, I've decided to use Google
groups as the new home for the vpFREE forum.

Google groups is free, allows the sending and receiving of messages by
email or via the website, and archives all messages on the website.

We have already been archiving vpFREE messages at the vpFREE-Archives
Google group since OCT 2019 and we'll use this group for the new
vpFREE forum.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/vpfree-archives

I'm still experimenting with the settings and joining procedures for
vpFREE-Archives, and will post more details and joining information
ASAP.

IIRC, joining Facebook requires only an email address, and that can be one from an anonymous emailer which can setup your email, allow you to retrieve messages or I believe even forward the emails to another email if you wish.

It seems many don't like Facebook Groups. Don't know much about them but Delphi forums looks like it might be a good fit. Reddit could also be an option.

I know a lot of people that won't have anything to do with Facebook for a number of reasons.  I don't have any problems with it, but, whatever platform this group moves to will be fine with me.

RE: [vpFREE] End of yahoo groups

I understand the many reasons that people would be opposed to Facebook.  For years, I avoided it like the plague (or Covid, ha-ha).  But once I finally tried it for specific reasons, I realized that it's what you make of it.  Skeletal profile, private page, private groups, and controls on the settings have thus far proven my concerns to be unfounded.

It would probably be the easiest to administer and join, but I too am willing to try whatever our administrator chooses.

After nearly 20 years on this group, I sincerely appreciate all of the information that I've gained here, not to mention some friendships that have lasted nearly 2 decades.  So the most important thing is that the group goes on – in whatever format!

I also vote for a Facebook group. Those with security concerns. Make an new email address on gmail (or whatever email you prefer) some thing like trishforvpfree@gmail.com (use it for nothing else)

Use that to join FB and then add no friends. Lots of ways to lock down security on FB. You can set notifications to get an email whenever a new post comes on that group and basically never look at FB unless there is new VPFree postings

I don't know anything about io.groups but would try that if that is where this is moved.

Well, I'm a long-time lurker, have never posted anything (but really appreciate the knowledge out there).  It does seem that the lowest common denominator would be some sort of email group, not sure how that would work.

[vpFREE] Facebook for now, (was End of yahoo groups)

I own and administer many successful Facebook groups on many different topics.

Facebook works very well, it's free, and there are many ways to lock down your security just fine.

It's also much easier for people to find.
Even if the group is set to private.

I'm going to miss Yahoo groups, but life goes on. Yahoo Messenger ran the world for a while and now it doesn't even exist. A few years ago who heard of "Line", but now it's worth billions and is the number one in Japan and Thailand...

... not doing too shabby in the rest of the world, either.

If the casino takes out your favorite machine, find a new one.
