Re: [vpFREE] Announcing the Shut Down of Yahoo Groups

I agree with Barry's comments relating to social media. I'm another person who does not use Facebook. And I never will.

Even though I haven't posted often, I have been an avid reader. My hope is that this group will continue in a non-Facebook environment.

There is public domain, web-based software that supports forums-- registered users post comments and anyone else who is registered is able to respond. And you can optionally receive email notifications when there are follow-ups to postings that are of particular interest to you. The functionality is comparable to what yahoo groups has offered. These forums typically have apps for IOS and Android or you can access the forums from any browser on a portable device.. Seems as though something like this would be a possibility for this group.. Perhaps there are better options than a forum but I hope that Facebook is not the ultimate outcome.

I know I'm a minority these days, but I don't participate in any social media.  I feel justified for this attitude by some of the security issues they've encountered, not to mention being happy not to have anything to do with a group that struggles with what is appropriate content -- e.g. hate posting vs freedom speech issues (and I don't have the right answer to those struggles).

Reasons notwithstanding, I'd prefer an email-based group such as the one we have now; there are undoubtedly other providers that offer this.  Email is likely the lowest common denominator for those who use any technology at all.

I must also wonder why I didn't get the notice that was sent to "members" ?

Perhaps a Facebook group would suffice?

Dear Yahoo Group Moderators and Members,

We launched Yahoo Groups 20 years ago to connect people around their
shared interests. We helped our users navigate new towns, keep in
touch with college friends, learn new skills, and most importantly,
build connections they may have lost or never had in the first place.
While we could not have been more proud of what we accomplished
together, we are reaching out today with heavy hearts to let you know
that we have decided to shut down Yahoo Groups on December 15, 2020.

Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several
years. Over that same period we've witnessed unprecedented levels of
engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium,
trustworthy content. To that end, we must sometimes make difficult
decisions regarding products that no longer fit our long-term strategy
as we hone our focus on other areas of the business.

Beginning December 15, 2020 the Yahoo Groups website will shut down
and members will no longer be able to send or receive emails from
Yahoo Groups. We've compiled a comprehensive FAQ here that includes
alternative providers and information on how this will impact your
group content.

Thank you for helping us build one of the earliest digital communities
— we're proud and honored to have forged countless connections over
the last 20 years and played a small part in helping build your
communities.

Sincerely,
The Yahoo Groups team
