[vpFREE] Re: Why Trying to Understand Randomness is Not a Good Idea

I wanted to share my own attempt to do some fast in-head evaluations of a gaming related random event...OK I'll spare you (myself) all the details...I failed...badly.

I have adopted this philosophy for myself pertaining randomness:

Doubt all that I suspect, and dismiss all of which I'm sure.

Since I no longer try, my failure rate has gone down sharply.

~FK

Hay consider this: if you only use math for these kinds of decisions, then the only way you can be wrong, is if you get the equations incorrect. What an awesome way to dodge personal responsibility.

Frank's discussion is spot on ... and, yet, I find myself in sharp disagreement with the subject title.

Clearly he addresses those who, for example, given an particularly adverse spate of hands, are inclined to question the randomness of a machine. His point is very apt, as it is for any number of other examples.

However, in my own play, I'm very keen on understanding (and attaining an acute gut grasp) of a very specific aspect of randomness -- "variance" (a measurement of the dispersion of random events).

I see a sharp intuitive sense of the relationship between variance and bankroll risk as being a key element of satisfying play (yielding an insurance that play expectation and reality are reasonably in synch). (As an aside, I really refer specifically to overall result dispersion rather than just the single point statistic "variance", which at times needs to be tweaked to be of practical use.)

For example, when I play a 50-play or 100-play machine, I want to promptly evaluate an appropriate risk level that optimizes my coin-through within the bankroll constraints with which I'm comfortable. Likewise, when I approach any other unfamiliar play with which I'm not totally familiar, it's equally important that I acquire a firm grasp of the related variance so that I can size my wagers accordingly and ideally avoid an after the fact "buyers remorse" due to loss experience in excess of comfort levels.

It's not my intent to belabor the point ... just to suggest that there are aspects of randomness that adept players will seek to understand.

[vpFREE] Re: Black Hawk, CO Casinos

Play in Blackhawk all the time.
I always felt Isle was "tight".
Try RIV, Mardi Gras, or The Lodge casinos.
Stay away from Ameristar!

We were there a couple of years ago and mainly played 25¢ VP machines (five coins in each time) at the Isle Casino. While the pay tables seemed to be acceptable we just seemed unable to hit anything larger than a full house. A buffet comp was totally out of reach even though we played consistently for about five hours. Between the two of us I don’t believe we hit more than one four-of-a-kind. Did we just chose the wrong casino or are they all still that tough on paying out? Just wondered if any of you had any suggestions that might produce better results? Thanks, GUAMY.

[vpFREE] Re: Stations Puzzle

You're correct that the increase was to keep the comp value the same, not to increase the free play or cash.

I'm not so sure that person really got an increase from $1400 in slot play to $2300 in cashback. They should swipe in a kiosk and see how much they have available now.

Maybe a reliable Station employee can answer your questions. And then ask another one at a different casino to see if you get the same answer. There's been a lot of misinformation circulating, some given out by employees.

Sounds like you just experienced some nasty video poker variance. Colorado regs require their casinos to have gambling machines that are honest and random.

Last month or so it was 4x on Fridays. This month it is 5x on Thursdays.
(Check for limit - I think it is 10,000 base points?)

5x continues on Senior Mondays.

Scot, you can add this to the LVA list.

[vpFREE] Casino du Lac-Leamy

Anyone have information on this casino. Isn't in vpFREE2 database. My daughter and son-in-law will be in Ottawa last week in October (he's at some NATO thing about weapons testing, his civilian job now with a government contractor at Fort Benning). Thought it might be a place for some recreational gambling and perhaps good food options????

[vpFREE] Re: Bob Dancer's LV Advisor Column - 4 OCT 2011

Great story! Even as a newcomer to video poker it's hard to understand his frustration of losing $400 in that scenario.

I am new to the game but I have done plenty of reading to realize that he should not be upset because he is making a good play but just having bad luck. That being said without knowing exactly how bad his losing streak is it's hard to put myself in his shoes. For that matter even if I know how far he was down I still couldn't put myself in his shoes because I have not experienced a losing streak. I can say that video poker is a much wilder mental ride than playing blackjack however I have run enough simulations to see just how "normal" a streak can be.
