An added note: According to RenoKeith, IGT bought back 90% of the machines from the casinos and destroyed them.

Gofastnismo, yes the first drawing is this Friday 2/10.

Csantos84, I agree with Gofastnismo that there will be many, many more entries than you can imagine. That's at least in part because everyone gets 10 entries just for swiping their card each day.

Reading the complete rules is always required reading. Casinos have been pretty good about making them available, but I don't see them on the Stations website yet. Just this: http://www.stationcasinos.com/promos/car-a-day/

The 4-play Jokers and Deuces were in Fiesta, Arizona Charlie's and Santa Fe Station. In December 1998 I went up to Fiesta to play the 4-plays. The promotion was .2% CB to be received in the first five days of January for all the points you ran in December. I intended to only playe the 3X days to get .6%. But a funny thing happened while I was there. The bulk of the machines were near the sports book. But there were two machines right next to that Panda fast food joint. They were stuck on 2X points so I played straight through. And on 3X days I was getting 6X. Believe it or not, out of all the players who worked that promotion, I was the only one who discovered it. I had no problem getting those machines. I pretty much lived in the Fiesta hotel that December.

Santa Fe wasn't worth going to because there was no promotion.

I went over to Arizona Charlie's one day to see what was going on with there 4-plays. When I got just inside the door I seen the drum. There was some kind of drawing promotion going on. I looked to my right to see the Odyssey's, 8 on one side, 8 on the other. On the side I could see, 4 players had 8 machines locked up. I walked to the other side, 4 players had 8 machines locked up. Looks like I'm late to the party I thought. I had my own gig at the Fiesta and left them alone.

RE: IGT prohibiting Silicon From Putting Out The Machines

There was no way IGT could do that. 4-play was a late arrival to the Silicon ballgame. The early games were video slots like Fort Knox, Lady of Fortune, Buccaneer Gold, Riddle of the Sphinx (all advantage slot games), Krazy Keno, and single line video poker games like Jacks or Better Bonus Playoff and Deuces Wild Bonus Playoff. All Silicon had to do was pull the 4-play and put the other games back on.

I did some googling around and it turns out there is a website devoted to Odyssey owners and enthusiasts. I'll put up the link. Read the post by RenoKeith. Silicon lost money every year they were in operation. In October 2000 Silicon was in talks with IGT. In December 2000 they agreed to merge. In March 2001 IGT announced the merger was complete.

I still marvel that people who have found their way to this group play video poker at a Harrah's. The last time I was at Harrah's was to see Rita Rudner. Walking through several hundred feet of the casino and looking a every video poker game, I failed to find a single one that was playable. Good luck at finding a host, and I hope you can overcome overwhelming odds and do well. Personally, I'll be giving Boyd and Stations my business.

Here's the first question:

What is the probability that anyone out of college will take a voluntary math test?

OK not serious...it'll be about 1.5 months before I post it, but I won't forget. cheers...

Dominic Tedeschi has been my host for over a year and I have communicated with him most of the time through e-mail.

If he is working, his responses usually come in less than an hour. When he is not working, he uses his Out-Of-Office responses to let you know (which includes information about contacting another host in his absence) and when he will be back in the office.

About 12 years ago Odyssey manufactured 4 play machines in FP Deuces and 4700 Joker in quarter and dollar. Since multi-line machines reduce volatility for the same total amount bet (e. g., quarter on 4 line vs. dollar single play), quarter players flocked to the the quarter machines due to reduced risk.

Unfortunately IGT held a patent on multi-line games and prevailed in a lawsuit prohibiting Odyssey from putting out the machines. Odyssey seemed to disappear after that, although I don't know whether they were acquired by IGT or went out of business.

Since correct understanding of probability is viewed as an insulating factor against problem gambling and poor math skills are seen as a risk factor for developing gambling problems I encourage everyone to give it a try.

There's no downside.

FK REPLY
Dear Barry. You've made good points, but I think you missed the point of why I posted this mental experiment. It was a "what if game" to illustrate how getting paid more for a jackpot is better than getting paid less.

There are so few good progressives around anymore it's a moot point, and the scouting, and waiting for seats, etc.., are all good reasons why it is too much effort & insufficient gain. I wasn't trying to tell anyone they should go out and do this TODAY.

My goal was to explain, using simple math and people's own results, some of the concepts of probability which govern video poker.

You seem to have confused a hypothetical math and history lesson with marching orders.

There was a time 20 years ago when you could have gone out and done it, but that time has mostly passed. I've been saying as much for years. In the heyday there were 6 large teams ranging from 10-60 players. Now the TOTAL number of people doing it, you could count on two hands and they make less every year.

In my recent interview with Dr. McCown it came out that "understanding probability math and adhering to it" is considered one of the best insulating factors to avoid gambling problems. Not understanding probability math is considered a risk factor for developing gambling problems. To the psychological community the line is clear. Math = Good

The problem is most people don't really understand probability math, or worse, they misunderstand it but think they have it right. Of course it's easy enough to differentiate if one sits down and takes a math test. Not too many people do that after leaving school.

Anyway, the points you made about the negative aspects of trying to play progressives in 2012 are mostly correct. Where I disagree, it's not worth the time to type to say.

However, the state of the VP in 2012 should NOT EFFECT the validity of using progressives as an EXAMPLE to teach basic probability math.

Even though the dodo bird is extinct, I can still say, "How many dodos would you have if a group of 2 dodos were joined by another?"...and have the correct answer be "3".

~FK

P.S. I intentionally used the "dodo bird" metaphor as a straight line and set up for someone else to make a joke. If you choose to use it there will be a small fee involved.

Here's another Odyssey advantage slot game called Buccaneer Gold. If you watch the video you will see how the daggers get banked. I you found one with 2 daggers to go, it was advantage. One to go and it was massive advantage.

IGT sued Williams for violating the Telnaes Patent. Around Christmas/New Year's 96/97 IGT got an injunction to have the Williams machines removed from the casinos. Those machines included Piggy Bankin', Shopping Spree and Safecracker, which were highly exploitable three-reel advantage slots.

I remember this time period well. In October 1996 I had thumbed into Laughlin, Nevada with my sleeping bag, day pack, 99 cents and a half a pack to Top rolling tobacco....to do some credit hustling. It was a bitch of a hitchike. In the old days I could thumb down I-5 from Oregon down to Sacramento, switch to 99 down to Bakersfield, then California 58 over Tehachapi to Barstow, hit I-40 and clear the state in 24 hours.

That had all changed by 1996. It took me 3 days just to get from Lodi to Tehachapi. I spent the night in my sleeping bag in the on-ramp clover leaf at Tehachapi. The next morning I bought a cup of coffee and was down to 99 cents. I was looking to thumb into Vegas but a guy stopped who was going to Laughlin. I took him up on the offer. That was a fateful ride.

I was in Laughlin probably around noon. A few hours of credit hustling later I had a massive $20 bankroll. In the process of credit hustling I picked up on the William's Piggy Bankin' machines and how to exploit them. I stuck to the quarters at first. 2 days later I had a massive $300 bankroll and put my first play down on dollars. I got thru that window too.

I checked into Harrah's that night and immediately called room service. "Yeah, gimme the biggest steak ya got." Then I headed into the bathroom "Wow, this joints got hot showers and everything." When I came out of the shower I seen myself in the mirror. I pointed a finger at myself in the mirror saying "Mickey, if you mess this one up there is no hope for you, boy. If you don't do the right thing then to hell with you. You can live under the bridges and work day labor for the rest of your life, jerk."

Two months later I was in Las Vegas working the dollar Piggy Bankin' machines. I walked into Circus Circus and all the Piggy Bankin' machines were shut down. I asked the attendent what was going on. She didn't know. I jumped on the bus and headed downtown. I walked into Binion's and all the Piggy Bankin' machines were shut down. "What the Hell?" I went over to the Golden Nugget and the Piggy Bankin' machines were shut down. Now I'm sweatin'. I looked all over one of the machines to find out who made them....Williams. I went to the phone booth and looked for a local number.

"Williams Gaming, may I help you?"
"Yeah, what's up with the Piggy Bankin' machines? Why are they being shut down?"
"We're being sued by IGT" she said. "over the Telnaes Patent. They got an injunction to have the machines removed but we're scrambling to have the injunctin blocked."
"Thank you." I hung up.

By the time Williams got the injunction blocked most of the Piggy Bankin' machines were gone. "What the hell am I gonna do now?" I thought.

Eventually, Williams and IGT settled out of court. But the effect was that Williams moved away from three reelers and into nine line video.
