We were in Metropolis at the end of June and it is a dump.  They have plans to rebuild the casino (on land) and restaurants but it is scheduled to be complete at the end of the year.  The staff at the hotel is incompetent and the restaurants are awful right now.  No VP is worth playing.  Right now the casino is a boat and is tiny and cramped.
 
The town itself is interesting if you are in to Superman.

It doesn't change the premise or conclusion of your article, but there were 14 winners, not 100.  It paid 1st through 12th place as well as two prizes for 22nd and 100th place.

In this case the casino didn't get rich off of dumb people. Since the prize fund was a fixed amount The Palms would have made an extra $50 per extra player that paid (up to a max. of 390).

Interesting article, you didn't mention how you did, although I know that isn't relevant to the article. I'm surprised that you called the article "a no brainer", with all your experience dealing with the general gambling public I think that what you saw was what any player of your calibre should expect, which was a lot of people making poor decisions.
The casinos don't get rich off of smart players as you know.
