[vpFREE] XVP: THE COLD DECKERS

"Delia, where you at?"
"I'm coming up on Belgrade now."
"Okay, sweetheart. I'll be at the Tiger's Paw."

When he walked in the door the game was full. "Hey, A.J., anybody on the list?" A.J. spun around. "No, you're first up, Johnny."
"Put Delia on the list behind me. She'll be here in a few minutes."
"Delia's coming? Good! Good! That means you won't be making any money this weekend. You can't win it as fast as she loses it."
"Well, that's the price a man has to pay, A.J."
"Johnny, how much does that dingbat cost you a year?"
"I don't know. Maybe 5 or six thousand. But the fringe benefits are pretty good."
"I can only imagine. I suppose I would do the same thing if I had a squeeze built like that" A.J. quipped. "Did you stop in down the street yet?"
"Oh, yeah" Johnny responded.
"What do you think?"
"They tried to cold deck me."
"They did? Did it cost you any money? I'll pay for it."
"No. Actually I got out the door with some of theirs."
"Everybody's been sayin' that game is fishy. Thanks for checking it out for me. They ain't long for this town."

The 9 seat opened up and Johnny bought in for two hundred. He loved 2 to 10 spread. They got no cheap turn cards from him. And they couldn't lay double bets into him on the end when they caught their gin card. A few hands in and the 3 seat started racking up. Johnny pulled out two more bills. "A.J. could you lock the 3 seat up for Delia. She shoud be here any minute." A.J. grabbed the bills and set the stacks in front of the 3 seat.

A few minutes later Delia walked in the door. She walked up to Johnny, said "hi, honey. Am I in the 3 seat?" then pecked him on the lips. Johnny grinned as the men gazed at Delia while she walked to the coat rack to hang up her coat then sashayed back to the poker table in the tightest fitting jeans ever. He knew she had to lay down on the bed to get them jeans buttoned up. "Howdy, gentlemen" she said as she sat down. Delia was in the game....and happier than a Mississippi firefly on a hot summer night.

Much to Johnny's chagrin she didn't wait for the big blind. She posted $2 under the gun. It was folded around to Johnny in the cutoff who also folded. The button player made it $12 to go. The blinds folded. Delia grabbed two redbirds and slung them to the felt. After the $2 rake there was $25 in the pot. The flop came Ace-Seven-Four rainbow. Delia checked. The button bet out $10. Delia called. Two more dollars raked and the pot was $43. The turn was an offsuit King eliminating the possibility of a backdoor flush. Delia checked. The button bet another $10. Delia called. There was $63 in the pot. A Five came on the river. Delia looked at her stack then grabbed two redbirds and threw them out. The button player grimaced, but made the call. Delia rolled her cards over exposing the 8-6 of diamonds for the nut straight. She had gutshotted the button player off the pot.

Johnny bit his lip. Delia had him in the jackpot. He knew SHE knew it too. If he pissed her off he could be going back to the hotel alone. The button player slammed his Ace-King face up on the felt for everyone to see the injustice of it all.

Johnny smiled at Delia. "Nice hand, sweetheart."
She smiled back that gorgeous smile. "Thank you, honey" she said as she stacked the chips.

There is a very, very old saying around these parts. "Every crooked dealer that got run out of Nevada came to Montana." Most all the games are on the up and up. But still, even today, you have to watch your ass.

[vpFREE] XVP: THE COLD DECKERS

The restroom was in eyesight of the poker table. Johnny walked into the restroom and looked at his wristwatch. He let a minute pass by then slowly pushed the door open. The players were sitting patiently waiting for his return. Ed was in the box, elbow on the table, forearm in the air, the deck in his palm parallel to the table.

"Your big blind" Ed said.
"You could have dealt around me" Johnny said as he posted.
"They didn't want to play three-handed" Ed said then started dealing.

Johnny took note that he didn't get to see the shuffle. As the players acted Johnny placed his middle finger on one of his cards and his index finger on the other card. They were cold. Not real cold but they certainly weren't the same temperature as the cards were when he left the table. Johnny knew he was being cold decked. The 2 seat and 4 seat had folded. Bill, in the small blind, made it two bets. Johnny appraised the situation. So they put the snapper in the small blind. Nice. Johnny rolled his cards up to find the:

Ace of Clubs and Queen of Clubs.

It was a trap hand in no-limit but not so bad in split-limit, unless....the bug was in the deck. Johnny knew it, but most players didn't. That is, until they lost a massive pot with it. They were gonna knock Johnny's stack back down with one big hand. Johnny knew that they knew how aggressive he was. They were expecting him to three-bet and Bill would cap it. Johnny called. He wanted to see how they planned to pull it off. He caught Ed and Bill giving each other a quick glance. They were surprised he didn't raise. Ed slowly burned and turned. The flop was:

Jack of Clubs, Ten of Clubs, Four of Clubs.

It was all Johnny could do to keep from laughing. He had flopped the Ace High Flush with the Royal Flush redraw. But he knew the King of Clubs would never come. Bill bet out $10. Johnny hesitated a bit then said "Spades are no good in this spot." He flung his cards straight into the muck. He could tell that Ed and Bill were shocked. Ed dropped the deck and shoved the meager pot toward Bill, who threw his cards face down toward the muck. Faster than greased lightning Johnny's arm went out and he snatched the cards without exposing them.

"Ed, did you know I'm clairvoyant? I'll bet you a hundred dollars I can tell you what these two cards are. You wanna take the bet, Ed?" Ed stared at him. "I'll tell you what, Ed. How 'bout I tell you what I think these two cards are and then you can decide whether or not you wanna take the bet. Ed, I think one of these cards is the Joker and the other is the King of Clubs. So whaddya say, Ed? You wanna take the bet?" Ed looked away. "Ed, I got $292 in this stack. I'm late for a very important meeting. Cash me out." Ed slowly reached down for the cashbox and set it on the table. As he counted the money Johnny got up and put his coat on. Ed shoved the money toward Johnny who picked it up and shoved it in his pocket. "You know, Mister, a guy could get hurt around here for talking too much" Ed warned. "Do you have a headache, Ed?" Johnny said as his right hand went into his coat pocket. "Here! Take a Pill!" Johnny's hand came out of his pocket and he flipped a 44 hollow point to the center of the table. Ed and Bill stared down at the bullet. Johnny made it to the door then turned and said "I better not catch any of you punks on my backtrail." Then he walked out.

Johnny pulled out his cell phone on the walk to the Tiger's Paw.

Johnny sat down in the 8 seat. The guy who had been talking to Ed was in the 6 seat. "My names' Bill" he said and stuck his hand out. "John, nice to meet you." They shook hands. The other two men sat down in the 2 and 4 seats. None of them were Bozeman regulars Johnny took note. He bought in for a hundred. The others bought in, then Ed, dealing, high carded for the button and got the cards in the air. Johnny had a lot of work to do. He had to try and beat the game and make sure everything was on the up and up too. Were the cards marked? Did Ed ever show a mechanics grip. Was he second or base dealing? Were they playing location or top hand? Were there any physical signals? Any code language in the table talk?

After several hands Johnny had figured out that the 4 seat, who was in the big blind when Johnny was on the button, was weak tight. When Johnny open raised on the button the guy was throwing away a third of his hands preflop. And of the hands he did play, he was throwing half of them away on the flop. He was a check/call, check/fold player. The guy just had no playback in him at all. Johnny took advantage of the situation. He started raising with practically any two when he figured to be heads up with the 4 seat. He was giving himself three ways to win. He could steal the blinds, flop the best hand, or bet the guy out of the pot. He was causing the guy to rebuy and he ran his stack up to $300 within an hour. He was beating the game which was a clear indication that the game was on the up and up so far. And he hadn't seen any shenanigans like marked cards, second or base dealing, location, signals, or top hand. But he did see some occasional worried looks from Ed.

"Hey" Bill in the 6 seat said. "Why don't we bump it up to $10-$20? Anybody object?" No one objected. "Why don't we throw the bug in the deck too" the two seat said.
"What's the bug?" Johnny asked trying to act like he didn't know.
"The Joker" Bill said. "Only counts for Aces, straights and flushes."
"A Joker in holdem? Sounds like fun" Johnny said, although he really wasn't crazy about the idea. Whoever was lucky enough to catch the Joker the most would beat the game. But he didn't figure to be in the game much longer. Everyone agreed.

Ed reached for a card packet, pulled a Joker out, and washed it into the deck. They redrew for the button and the game was on. Johnny figured to make one last move then get out of the game. Under the gun, Johnny placed his middle finger on one of the cards and his index finger on the other card. He was trying to get a feel for the warmth of the cards. Cards that are in use, especially after an hour, warm up from the heat of the players hands and friction. Especially with a fast dealer like Ed. Johnny faked looking at his hand and folded. "Gotta go to the boys room" he said. "Back in a flash."

[vpFREE] XVP: THE COLD DECKERS

The next day Johnny jumped on the early afternoon Rimrock Trailways to Bozeman. They were at the convenience store in Big Timber for a rest stop when Delia called.

"Hi, honey. I'm pulling out of the driveway now."
"Okay. You be careful, sweetheart."
"Don't worry, Johnny. I got the Glock in the glove compartment."
"Well, git it out of the glove box and sit it on the console. Throw a rag over it. If any men mash on you on the highway you show 'em the Glock.
"I'll be okay, honey."
"Call me and let me know where you're at."
"I will."

They hung up. Johnny looked at his wristwatch. He would be in Bozeman in a little over an hour. It would take Delia three hours. When he got into Bozeman he called a cab. Then he called Delia.

"Where you at?"
"Somewhere between Drummond and Deer Lodge."
"Okay, keep me posted" he said and hung up.

He cabbed it to the Redstone Lodge on North 7th and checked in. He threw his backpack in the room and took off down the street. He walked past the Tiger's Paw and down to the Western Saloon a few blocks further. Inside, he walked to the bar and ordered a Bud Light. Then he spun around and looked at the poker table. A new game in town. He scanned the walls and ceiling around the poker table for security cameras. There weren't any. A couple of guys were sitting at the poker table talking.

"Hey, what time does the poker game start?" Johnny yelled. One of them looked up at him.
"Won't be long" the guy said. "I'll put you on the list. What's your name?"
"John."
"Okay, John. You're in." Then the guy got up and walked over to Johnny.
"My names' Ed. Nice to meet you, John."
"Nice to meet you too, Ed."
"You live in Bozeman?" Ed asked.
"No. I'm on my way back to Missoula from Billings. Thought I'd hole up here tonight and play some cards. You run the game?"
"Yes, I run it and deal it too."
"That's gotta be pretty good money running and dealing games. I wish I could deal. Where'd you learn?"
"Nevada. I used to deal at the Cal-Neva and John Ascuagua's, but that was years ago. I ran private games around Alaska for a long time. But things got slow so I moved it down this way."

Ed walked over to a booth not far from the poker table and talked to the two men sitting there. Then he walked back over to Johnny. "We're fixing to start a 4-8 holdem game if you don't mind starting 4 handed until we get some players."
"I'm ready to play" Johnny said then pulled out his cell phone. "Where you at, Delia?" he asked. "I'm at the truck stop in Rocker getting gas."
"Okay, sweetheart. Call me when you get to Belgrade."

River Johnny felt the vibration of his cell phone. It was a text. She always started with a text. He hadn't seen nor heard from her in two months. He was getting the itch. He open up the text and read it; "honey, where are u?"

"Deal around me, Jack" Johnny said as he got up and walked to a corner of the room. He cleared the text then hit #1 and send. Delia answered the call.

"Hi, honey. How are you? Where are you?"
"I'm good. I'm in Billings. How have you been?"
"Great. Are you playing poker?"
"What else would I be doing? What's happening in Lolo?"
"I moved back to Missoula."
"What part of town?"
"Off Broadway and Russell. When are you going to come and visit?"

She must need her rent paid, Johnny thought.

"Maybe soon. But I gotta stop in Bozeman. A.J. wants me to check something out."
"How have you been running?" she asked.
"Good. I had a great week last week. Look, Delia, tomorrow is Friday and I'm gonna be in Bozeman. How about you drivin' over and spending the weekend with me?"
"Are you gonna let me play poker?"
"Yeah, sure" Johnny sighed. "But, sweetheart, you gotta learn to lay off those trash suiters unless you're around back and getting volume. For your speed you need to stick to Ace-Jack or better. And you gotta learn to get out of the way with those small pairs when you don't flop a set."
"How much are you gonna let me play?"
"You can play tomorrow night and Saturday night then drive back to Missoula on Sunday. I'll probably go with you. I wanna tag that game at the Silver Slipper."
"Okay, honey. You got a date. And you can stay with me when we get back."

She definitely needs her rent paid, Johnny thought.

"But I'm gonna get a late start. We have a special prayer meeting tomorrow. One of the deacons has cancer. We're gonna pray for him."
"Alright, sweetheart. But call me when you get ready to leave. Bring your Glock. I don't like you on the highway without protection. You been practicing flipping that safety off and on like I told you?"
"Yes, I'm good at it now."
"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow evening."
"You got it, honey. I'll be there. Bye."

Johnny thought about A.J. when he hung up. A.J. ran a good clean 2 to 10 holdem game at the Tiger's Paw in Bozeman. It was a beer and shot saloon, greasy spoon restaurant, 20 machine casino, with two poker tables. A.J. owned the tables and leased the space. Johnny and A.J. had known each other for 25 years. They were both rounders and kept running into each other at the card tables around the country. A.J. was passing through Bozeman several years before and stopped to hit the card tables. He saw an opportunity to get off the road and make a good living running the poker games at the Tiger's Paw.

He was damn good to his players. A regular could come in, get a meal, then put it on A.J.'s tab even if there was no game going on. The first 5 players got $120 for $100. And every once in a while he would throw a no buyin tournament and post all the prize money himself. He also hauled the drunk players home at night.

A.J. liked to keep the chips going around and around and down. Johnny pulled too much money off the table for A.J.'s liking so as a courtesy Johnny only played in the game a few days here and there.

"Sorry, Jack. I gotta cash out and get a good night's sleep" Johnny said when he returned to the poker table.
"Don't come back!" one of the players joked.
"Not for a while!" Johnny quipped.

Your basic RNG produces a random number between 0.0 and 1.0

It is a simple matter of programming to map this spectrum from 1 to 52, or 1 to 53, or any other requisite two end numbers.

For a multi-game machine, I would suppose it is cheaper to employ just one RNG, and to programmatically map its output to the range for the game in question

In the above, the word "random" is to be taken as "equally likely to some statistical criterion".

This is easier to accomplish with physical RNGs than algorithmic RNGs, but for gaming purposes, algorithmic RNGs are "good enough"

Re: [vpFREE] Advice on learning VP

You could do worse than starting with the best VP training software,
since it's only $55! Dan Paymar has been working on his OpVP
software for many years, always attempting to improve it beyond what
anyone else has ever dreamed of, and his version 3.1 (new released)
reflects his vast knowledge of the subject. An engineer with a
project, he is always fiddling with it to keep it the best. My
understanding is there will be frequent updates, as he improves OpVP,
and I suspect updates will be free, or at least inexpensive.

If your goal is to move to the next achievement level with VP,
realize that by doing it all by yourself it could take thousands of
hours of thoughtful, insightful study to advance significantly. Or
you could spring for the $55, as I did recently, and you will become
a master of VP, and quickly.

OpVP lets you tackle any pay schedule for any game, even games that
haven't been proposed yet! For starters, you'll want to know the
vast variety of games that are out there. Using vPFREE2 (free,
actually, thru vpFREE) will lead you to most casinos throughout the
country, and show you every VP game each has in inventory. You'll be
amazed at the variety of pay schedules for some game; they can number
a dozen or more. Dan's OpVP permits you to set up any one of these
games with its exact pay schedule, and will prepare the optimum
playing strategy for that game (which you can print out as your very
own property). Then you can practice that precise strategy, and as
you play the software teaches you to play accurately, according to
that detailed strategy.

Well, at $55 it's truly cheap!

Not necessarily. If you are playing a nonjoker game but the number mapped to the joker is selected, then the card (joker) woudl be discarded and not shown, and another number would be pulled.

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how this works. There
are no "decks." There is no "random chip." The CPU in the
machine's computer generates random numbers (pseudo-random actually, but
essentially the same in this case) between 1 and 52 (53 for games like
Joker's Wild). The card assigned to that number is dealt. The random number
algorithm is typically seeded by the clock, which changes in millisecond
increments. Unless your friend pressed to deal button in the same
millisecond, the outcome of the game would not be the same.

[vpFREE] Advice on learning VP

Hello all!

I'm a new member to vpFREE. I have been going to casinos for years and have played video poker as a recreational player. I want to improve my skills but not sure of the most appropriate way to start. When I walk into a casino and see the rows of vp machines, it gets overwhelming and I am never to clear on what machines are worth playing and if I am making the best decisions during my play.

My question: Should I start by picking up a book on vp or by getting one of the many software training programs available?

Like I said earlier, I have been a recreational player for years so I understand the very basics of the game, but I guess I am looking to take my game to the next level and learn a little more in depth about vp.

Thanks!
