MGM's players club has gotten a lot more structured, more like TR for better or worse. What they call "express comps" can be used at any outlet that accepts them. You'll get offers from all of their LV properties (except Circus I think) that will obviously vary by property.
Last time we were in Vegas we stayed at M'Bay, I played VP at Luxor, and we played live poker at MGM Grand. Within a week of getting home I was getting mailings from Luxor, so apparently concentrating your play at one place will get you some mail at least. I don't know how much discretion hosts have to hand out comps, which is the main reason I can think of to play where you stay.
