I forgot to add the $15/rental that American Express charges for their protection program. I supposedly don't have to deal with anybody but American Express. They handle it all.
Alamo's $13/day charge for Liability is now my setpoint. I was taken aback by Payless $20/day liability and she claimed she gave me the lowest priced liablity option.
My thinking is the $13/day plus the American Express charge of $15/rental (no matter the length of rental) puts American Express between me and the rental agency; their insurance company; my insurance company; the claimant insurance company (if any).
Whether you have had to deal with a claim is not relevant. I too have been fortunate in not getting into accidents that had injuries. Except when a teenager way back in the 70's and I had a little car called Simca (I think it was made in Yugoslovia). Hit a car on it's side going slow at a four way stop. The passenger opens his door; take off his seat belt and falls out (after about ten seconds) :-)

But, not having incurred a single vehicle liability claim in my 37 years of driving (I've had my share of collision claims), I personally wouldn't pay up $159 per rental for the option to forgo a claim to my auto insurance in the event of such a claim.
