Dave, I agree with the general line of reasoning you outline. But, not having incurred a single vehicle liability claim in my 37 years of driving (I've had my share of collision claims), I personally wouldn't pay up $159 per rental for the option to forgo a claim to my auto insurance in the event of such a claim.

For that matter, faced with a liability claim, I'd feel much more secure with a firm I've personally vetted standing behind me, than whoever backs the renter's insurance option.
