Just to pose a counterpoint, I find the concept of "short term risk of ruin" very helpful in my planning a recreational trip. I start with a specific pay-table, the number of hands I would like to play and the denomination at which I would like to play. Using software like Dunbar's or Video Poker for Winners, I can compute what my bankroll should be for a reasonable "short term risk of ruin" for that trip (0.1%, 1%, 5%, 10%, whatever). I find that by doing this, I have confidence that I can satisfy my playing goals, and the bankroll that I should have with me.
