Bob, while I understand your personal POV, I neither agree with, or even really understand your concept of the VP wants of "rec. players", as you describe them below.
I am certainly a recreational player, as opposed to being a professional player. I do not count on VP to provide my livlihood. As a matter of fact, my "real" occupation is very different from that of a professional VP player.
However, I am a KNOWLEDGEABLE player, having practiced hundreds of hours on software as well as playing extensively in casinos during the past 25 years. I can attest that, neither I, nor my many equally capable VP playing friends and acquaintances would consider playing NON-PROG. games with pay tables such as 9/5JOB, 7/5BP, 8/6BPDX or PNSU. Frankly, we know that to do so is very hazardous to our bankroll, and (to quote myself from a much earlier post) can lead to "bankrolluptcy". ({O:
Why you would feel that we would be satisfied playing inferior pay tables is an enigma to me. That is not to say that there are not a multitude of VP players, who willingly play whatever pay tables are available to them. Because of a reckless disregard for their money, they are surely better patrons, as far as the
casino is concerned. So, I can easily understand why the casinos want to cater
to them rather to "us".
I can assure you that all rec players, (just as all pro players) cannot be lumped into one neat package, as you seem to indicate.
As far as "short term" results having import, as Peter said, it has greatly aided my trip bankroll decisions. Fortunately, I have never had the misfortune of losing my bankroll before it was time to go home. Furthermore, when my short term results are positive, I enjoy playing all the more, and have lots more "fun" while doing so. I'm not sure why you think that this is not revelant.
In conclusion, I believe that rec. VP players are a diverse group of individuals, who
have many different goals when they sit down to play. I would never presume to suggest to another player that his/her goals are wrong just because they differ from mine.

<<So let me pose a question/counterpoint of my own.
Assuming someone is a so-called recreational player. If that player is only interested in surviving, having some fun, and taking a shot in the SHORT TERM, then if 9-6 JoB is the type of game this player enjoys playing, does it really matter if the casino offers 9-5 JoB instead? Or 8-6 Bonus Poker Deluxe? Or any game in the 98.5 to 98.9 range? Doesn't a game like that basically provide the same kind of thrill for the short term player that a full pay 9-6 JoB would offer? And with basically the same chance of hitting a royal in that short term?
And if the player likes NSU at 99.73%, then wouldn't he also like PNSU at 98.9% just as well? Or isn't a 9-6 DDB 98.9 just as good as a 10-6 DDB?

Just to pose a counterpoint, I find the concept of "short term risk of ruin" very helpful in my planning a recreational trip.
