The scumbags gain access to a someone's email account, usually by tricking
the victim to type their account/password info into a fake login page
("phishing"), then use the exploited account to send spam to everyone
in the victim's address book.

If the victim is a vpFREE member, chances are the vpFREE posting address
is in their address book, so that's how a copy comes to the group.

The innocent victim is generally completely unaware that their account has
been compromised in this manner until the angry responses start coming in.

One way to protect yourself: never ever ever type your password into a
page that asks for it, if you were linked to that page from an email.
If Yahoo sends you an email saying you need to login, go to your web
browser and type www.yahoo.com yourself. This is especially important if
you are logging into a banking site for what I hope are obvious reasons.
