After Barrick bought out Jackie Gaughan they were making unsolicited
offers to Joe for the Atomic. I asked Joe if he was gonna
sell. "You, never know," he said. "You know, no one has ever lost
money on this corner." To which I said "Joe, no one else has ever
been on this corner."
The last time at the Atomic Stella told me Joe was down with a bad
leg and hadn't been to the bar in two months. That's not good for a
man his age.
Joe runs a clean ship but the trouble with the cops was started by
the longtime and trusted graveyard bartender who eventually succumbed
to temptation. He abruptly "retired." Metro got the bar across the
street at the Ambassador East closed forever. And I think Jackie
still owned it when that happened.
Believe it or not, Joe and Stella are very religious and give heavily
to the Catholic Church. Joe didn't tell me himself but others have
told me they plan on leaving the bar to the Catholic Church. They
are childless.
I don't recall any scenes from the movie "Casino" being filmed in the
Atomic. And I think I would have recognized it if I seen it. There
could have been some filming outside. Dennis wouldn't know because
he is very new at the Atomic. They did alot of filming downtowm
though. When DeNiro comes walking out of a casino at the beginning
of the film and the car blows up is easily recognizable as Main
Street Station. MSS was shuttered at the time. I recognized one of
the restaurant scenes as Center Stage at the Plaza. When DeNiro
finds his wife and her pimp boyfriend at a restaurant and the pimp
gets beat up in a car outback, that was a little Mexican restaurant
on North Main with a fleabag hotel behind it. I believe the scene at
the end of the movie where the ex-wife staggers down a hallway and
falls dead of an overdose was the Little Hotel on South Main--now a
homeless shelter. The scenes inside "The Tangiers" were filmed at
the Riviera.
