And the comment. I had the same reaction to the Brian Wilson/Jeff Beck concert, which I caught in New York City. You did miss Brian and part of his band coming back during the tail end of Beck's set, where Beck played "Surfs Up" on his guitar with background vocals from Brian, Al, Mike, and Jeff. And at the end, both bands got together and played some old Beach Boy hits.
I knew that Brian Wilson and Company were coming back later and I told my wife that, but she hated Beck's music so much that it was just too painful for her to sit through it any longer than she already had.
We had both seen Brian Wilson and Company on his first solo tour a couple of years ago with Al Jardine in Boston but not David Marks (without Beck or any other acts on the bill). Had we known how many more songs Beck would play it might have been more bearable to wait, but we didn't know if it would be one more or ten more. So it was a pain versus gain decision.
Regarding condo versus standard hotel room: A couple of our previous decisions to stay in condos were driven by timeshare trades that only cost us the weekly exchange fee such as at the Wyndham Grand and the Holiday Inn Desert Resort. In the case of the Elara, it was an excellent one time deal where we got a full one-bedroom three room suite in a great location for the same price as a standard room at say TI or PH. In the case of MGM Signature this time it was a Travelzoo deal that offered a cheaper daily rate for a fully-equipped large studio condo than for a much smaller standard size hotel room at say MGM or the like.
In the case of Palm's Place the rate was cheaper than a standard room at the Palm's and offered a larger more fully-featured condo and a $40 food credit at Simons.
It's not like we won't stay in standard rooms when the price is right. In the past we have stayed at TI, PH, Hard Rock, Red Rock, Bellagio, the Venetian, Wynn, Palazzo, and many times at GVR. So it all depends on finding a 4 to 5 star facility at the best bang for the buck. Often we will spend Thursday to Sunday at a lesser 4 star facility when rates everywhere are higher weekend rates and then Sunday to Thursday stay at the more upscale facility when lower weekday rates apply.
Again it always is based on who happens to be providing us the best bang for the buck at the time. If comped rooms at decent places are available we typically stay there as we have in the past at GVR and Redrock. But offers change over time and if there are no comped rooms at decent places or no decent timeshare condo trades available, I just look at again where I can get the best room for the lowest cost.
Also my minimum standards change when I do a solo trip without my wife. Then I am more flexible where I am willing to stay and have stayed in the past at LVH and Rio and also consider offers from the Orleans, Gold Coast, and Sam's Town.
