I can think of only two reasons a slot attendant would ask a winner to play
off a jackpot screen. One is that many players are also very superstitious
and would rather not play a machine that has just hit. This could
potentially be more of a problem on multi- game machines where the last
hand/result for that game shows when the game is selected. The second reason
I can think of is that some people might think they could get paid for a
jackpot that has already been paid by claiming it just came up but didn't
set off any alarms etc. Of course the machine has an internal history which
will prove them wrong, but a hastle and/or scene on the floor is easily
avoided by having the real winner play off the screen after being paid.
There is no legal way the casino can force a person to play even one hand or
game that that person doesn't want to play, but most just do it as a
courtesy to the person who has just given him a big stack of Benjamins.
