First of all, let me state for the record that I have nothing
against any particular ethnicity, particularly the Asian peoples,
who gave us, among other things, Kung Pao Chicken, the Hyundai
Sonata, and that world-famous architect, Flank Rroyd Light.
In my misspent youth, I spent a fair amount of time in the legal and
illegal gambling dens of San Francisco and Oakland. I learned how to
play pai gow, mah jong, fan tan, sic bo, etc. there, and also
learned to speak a little bit of Chinese.
I can unequivocally state that the Chinese (and other Asian people,
by observation) are the greatest, most fearless gamblers in the
world. They will bet what would seem to us to be insane amounts
without batting an eye. They place immense importance on luck and
magic portents and auspicious numbers and times and places; they
will just sit there on the sidelines for hours and then suddenly,
for no apparent reason, shove out $20,000.
So knowing this, if I were a casino host, I would actively court
Asian players. You betcha! Who is a better casino customer than a
superstitious risk-taker who is willing to bet everything he has if
he feels the moment is right???
