You were "freee entertainment" -- for as long as you chose to be. :)

On the cell phones, esp. if they're right next to you, one "solution" is to do what this lady did to you -- join their world. Certainly, if there's no one else around and the person with the phone is talking, they must be talking to you -- right? So when they say "hello", you answer "hello", and participate in their conversation completely right thru everything they say, as though it was directed at you -- until they realize they have a problem talking on their phone next to you, and go away.
