Sounds like many casinos (most?) no longer ask for it, from other posts -- but clearly, you need to provide a SS#, and it doesn't really matter if they have your card, or have your SS# because you gave it to them and provided ID.
I'm quite sure you'd be in a heap of trouble if you got caught trying to evade getting the correct SS# on your W2G. Don't mess with the IRS, they don't play nice.
