the count system you describe is called a serpentine vote, since usually
it's done with everyone on one side standing up and then counting off - going up
and down the rows in a snake-like (serpentine) manner.
They didn't use it to count the vote; rather to count the attendance since
they needed to know just how many people were in the room. It was done where
I was caucusing as well.
