I used to feel the same way. Then I became learned. I once had 4 Royals in under 5 hours of playing single line. I have a picture somewhere of the two machines having side by side RFs as I hadn't gotten paid on one of them, when I slid over to the adjacent machine and hit the other. Worst of all, it was one of those casinos where the machines were viewable from behind glass separating a major thoroughfare from the casino. Though I was very happy to have hit them. I am not a fan of all of the people who came over and had the absolutely most stupid things to say to me about it. I really should have recorded it. Yes, there is an occasional case of a casino cheating on VP. I've heard of it happening twice in my lifetime. As long as there are reel slots in the casino, then it simply isn't worth the risk of any casino to try to increase the hold on VP. Heck, most casinos just lower the paytables and most of us will not have the discipline not to play them.

Any video poker player who has doubts about the randomness with which cards are being dealt in a casino should really walk from that casino.  To do otherwise, with money on the line, is simply irrational.  Even if you're not confident in your doubts, the uncertainty that the house may be pulling a fast one will make every loss all the more sour an experience. 

If you insist (despite your best judgement) on playing, then begin meticulously tracking your play results and the frequency with which you hit lesser occurring hands.  It may be that such tracking, over time (say 30 quad cycles -- roughly 12000 hands, if questioning the frequency with which you hit quads) will help dispel the notion that the machine stats are off from expectation.

Oh no it has nothing to do with the variance it's not just me. I am such a regular there I know a lot of the other regulars and they are experiencing the same play. it does weird things like it will not pay any hands whatsoever not even pairs and then it will pay a couple of full houses. What it seems they do is shut off the four of a kinds. 
I played thousands of hands a day when I go I usually spend about 6 to 8 hours about three times a week normally. Without any four of a kind I will talk to other regular players to see about four of a kind and they say they haven't had one most of the time

The "cycle" is calculated the same as the wavelength is calculated in physics... the inverse of the frequency.  The major difference between physics and gambling is that the observed frequency while gambling is heavily influenced by variance.  To eliminate the effect of variance, the "cycle" that VP players talk about is the inverse of the average frequency for an infinite number of trials.

To be perfectly correct, the "cycle" is not directly influenced by the rules or the pay table.  It is determined by the strategy used which is in turn usually based on the pay table/rules but in rare cases may also be influenced by certain bonuses offered.

I'm not "scared" to play it now or a year from now.  Interesting that you would say that.  As for you 810K scenario, you could have far less than 16 or more than 23.  It is true that it is based on the pay table of the game, but not by the rules.

Machines don't have individual royal cycles. The royal cycle ( assuming perfect play) is based on the pay table of the game. If the royal cycle is 40,500 hands, that is the royal cycle and it doesn't matter if the game is idled for a month or not. 

If you have 1000 of these machines and they each accumulate 810,000 hands ( 20 royal cycles), some machines will have 16 royals and some will have 23 royals but it is not because of the machine. It is because of the game and the rules. 

So, if you are scared to play when the machines first turn on, you should be scared to play a year later.

Since I'm tired of all the discussions regarding the coronavirus, I have a question that is VP related.  With all of the gaming machines shut down or inactive, will it make a difference on the royal cycle of each machine if it was put in standby or completely turned off?  Just prior to the shutdown, I noticed all gaming machines were put into a standby inactive mode with just a small message showing.  What about like the El Cortez with their coin droppers in the back of the property?  Will the RNG start a fresh cycle if the machine is completely turned off?  If it was in a standby mode, will it pick back up once a machine is turned back on and cycle thru from the moment it went into hibernation?  Will the old coin droppers behave the same way.

If it was me, I would not play right after the machines are all back on line.  Maybe wait a few days.
