I occasionally play in some of these tournaments (small), have never come close to winning anything and think I have really quick reactions.

You might have missed some stuff. Some of the tournaments don't have rules about helpers, helpers can be useful for the stuff you might be missing. Sensory overload is definitely part of the tournament.
