Finally, a math question I can answer. Yes, there is such a thing as average speed. You just get the speed of all the people that you want to average, add them up, and divide by the number of people. OK, I know (I've been told before), nobody likes a wise ass (but I still can't resist once in a while).
Unfortunately, what you probably want to know is the answer, and without knowing who is being averaged, and what their speeds are, there is no answer. However, prior discussions on this list have generated reports of 500 to 2000 hands per hour. Many have questioned the higher ranges of speeds, but I am reasonably convinced from those who have responded that they are being reasonably honest - although I don't know if they can sustain those speeds over longer periods of time. Most everyone agrees that speed at the expense of accuracy is too costly to justify whatever reasons there are for playing faster than the speed at which you can play correctly.

3. playing speed.
I've never timed my playing speed until today. I knew I was fast but was astonished in two time trials of 15 minutes each, one was 1200 and another at 1275, when multiplied by 4. Is there a such thing as an average speed?
