Ellis Island was charging tax on meals when I used their
coupon as payment. In fact their policy was (and still may be)
the strangest I have ever encountered.

Their prime rib meal is described as including an EI beer or
root beer. My bill would show that they added the price of
the beer (not the root beer, tho) to the listed price, computed
the tax on that total, then subtracted the price of the beer to
arrive at the total due.
