I started to fly Spirit from Portland to Las Vegas and have seen my airfares drop by 50% or more than I pay on SWA.
You just have to pack small and pick and choose what you want. I'm willing to pay their $60 annual club fee if I pay less for seats. I pack small, skip the bag fees and pay $15 each way for their Big seat. I've never sat in one of their regular seats, but if you're 6 feet or taller you'll have a really hard time.
Carry on free used to sell bags that are 16 x 14 x 12 but they might be out of business or gheir demand is just too high. I own one but I actually use a.smaller bag that's built better. Usually they will let me put it above.my seat sinve their is always room.
Spirits policy is as long as you bag will meet their size, then it flies free. A 16 x 14 x 12 bag will NOT fit on their A319 planes. But it still flies free in the overhead bin.
The other benefit is if you buy a big seat you can use the 1st
