Tonight's
guest on Gambling with an Edge will
be Michael Konik, author of The Man with
the $100,000 Breasts, and other Gambling Stories. The book is a fun read
and the title is one of those that grabs your attention.
In the
title story, there is this guy, Brian, who will do ANYTHING to earn a buck. We
meet him in the story where he has made a $14,000 bet that he will stay in a
bathroom for 30 days. And to make it tougher, the guys who made the bet kept
sending lots of guys in to use the bathroom while Brian was living there.
(I can imagine it. "Hey Joe. Why don't you go by that new Cuban restaurant and eat three bowls of black bean soup and then go by and make sure Brian isn't getting lonely?") Personally this story tickled my funny bone and I'm going to be asking Konik
about it to see if there's any more to the real story that didn't make it into
the book.
Another of
the stories in the book was about this team who cheated a casino out of
$250,000 in a way most of us haven't heard about. Another story is about a guy
selling NFL picks made by his 4-year-old son (My guess is if the kid were asked
to choose between the Cowboys and the Rams, he's ALWAYS going to pick the
Cowboys, not matter what the line is. He knows what cowboys are and probably
doesn't know what a ram is.) Another features a cheat who had a $17 million run
who swears he was gambling on the up and up when it happened. Other stories
feature Phil Hellmuth or Huck Seed or Max Rubin.
