You are quite are quite correct that these statements taken out of context are diametrically opposed. They were both appeals to different people. One was being too silly. The other was on the way to turning the thread dark and depressing.
My original idea for the thread was somewhere in-between these two extremes...and at the time they were made, they were appeals for balance.
