Mickey makes some discerning comments here. For most conventional wage
slaves, the idea of not having health insurance is unthinkable but he makes a
good point if you have to pay for insurance you should save a significant
amount of money if you're in relatively good health. He's right when he says
the industry is based on fear. Basically the product is freedom from fear
which is the same product that is pitched daily by the ads you see for just
about anything that you can self-identify with. If we had to buy
insurance, we would probably want the coverage that we have at work which, for a lot
of us, has small deductibles or co-pays. This is the wrong way to use
insurance. It should be used primarily for catastrophic coverage & the small
charges should be paid from your emergency fund. On the question of group
coverage vs individual coverage, group is almost always better &, even if it's
more expensive, generally you should choose group over individual. Why?
Let's say the policies are equal but cheaper as individual (not likely). Have
you ever tried to negotiate with a multi-billion dollar ins co when
there's a dispute about claims? Which do you think would have a better chance --
individual or group?
N.B. I do have health, auto, LTC & probably too-low deductibles.

Now, for insurance? I think I've made out like a bandit. I've never had
any, except on some jobs years ago where it was provided. What does the stuff
cost? A few thousand a year? Multiply that by about 40 years and I guess
that is how much money I've saved. Now I know there is a first time for
everything and maybe I'll have to break down and buy some of the stuff in the
future. But I just turned 58 and the only times I've ever been to a doctor
was to get stiched up after a bar room brawl. I've just never had a health
problem. Yes, I know, that won't last forever.
Once an advantage gambler, always an advantage gambler. With insurance,
the insurance companies are the advantage gamblers and the people who buy the
stuff are the sucker bettors. The whole industry is based on fear.
