Someone in this thread mentioned that their dream is to hit a royal
flush on a mistake. That actually happens a lot.
In a game like 10/7 DDB on a hand like 'AKQ7'5, the correct play is to
hold the four-flush, but a lot of not-so-knowledgeabl
the three-card-royal. One time in 1,081 that fills in. In the same game,
on hands like 'AK7' 43, the correct play is the three-card-flush rather
than the two-card royal. In games where flushes return 6 for 1 (like
better versions of JoB and DDB), from 'AKT4'J and similar hands, it's
right to hold the four-flush. Many people "error" on that and end up
connecting.
There was a thread here recently about someone who preferred holding K
over 'KT'. Knowledge people here correctly pointed out that it's
frequently a close play and sometimes one way is preferred and sometimes
the other, but when 'KT' is incorrectly held, once in 16,215 times you
get a royal.
In DDB, on the hand AQJ'63', the correct play is QJ. Many players hold
the A by itself. Although drawing four perfect cards is a real long
shot, it happens. In all sorts of non-wild games, when players get dealt
an unsuited QJ and "nothing else", they hold one of the high cards
rather than both. This can lead to a royal.
Inside straights with no high cards are held in most games except those
where you get 2-for-1 for two pair. Many folks toss these hands away.
This happens enough that even the (at best) 383,000 to 1 odds against
receiving a royal on the redeal are sometimes beaten.
In all versions of Deuces Wild when the royal pays 4,000, on a dealt
wild-royal containing exactly one deuce, the correct play is to keep all
five cards. Sometimes players toss the deuce and the odds are only
46-to-1 against their filling in the royal. This must have happened
thousands of times.
Most of the mistakes listed here wouldn't be called "really dumb" unless
the player making the mistake was at least an intermediate player. They
would be called "sub-optimal"
kinds of errors all of the time (and we ALL are less-than-expert at most
things in life.) But all of these errors lead to extra royals some of
the time.
There's a price for these extra royals in that overall you are losing
more than is necessary. So for the person who dreams of a royal on a
mistake, I say be careful what you wish for.
