Re: [vpFREE] Masks in Casinos

I'm did not state I'M doing that in my original post.  I was pointing that I didn't think a small contingent of casino security was going to be able to enforce mask wearing in such a large venue as on a casino floor.  That it would be up to the general public to gauge how much risk they want be exposed to and what they would be willing to do as a group.  There's no way casino security is going to enforce mask wearing or social distancing on the thousands of patrons who enter the casino floor.  Not going to happen.  Obviously, people can't smoke or drink with masks on.

Someone said they were recently at a newly reopened casino and the casino took out chairs from banks of machines (i.e. 2 chairs at a bank of 4 machines).  But unless a casino is willing to turn OFF the machines they took the chairs from, what's the point?  People will just move the chairs from other machines and sit side by side again, negating social distancing.  I'm fairly sure casinos do not want to turn off half of their machines.

So, my point was it's up to the general public as to what they are willing to put up with for their own comfort and safety.

I certainly see no benefit in trying to shame someone into complying with the rules.  Wagging your finger at someone who is speeding usually doesn't help :)  Shooting them is probably extreme (at least I think so).

But speeders and those who do not wear masks are endangering others, although the offenders usually don't seem to understand that.  Other than hiding at home, I'd be interested what action people would suggest to get others to follow rules that the government sets in the interest of public health and safety, and that the vast majority of Americans say they support when polled.

good advice...anyone "deathly" worried about contacting this Virus should not go to a Casino..confronting others for not wearing a mask is likely to get nose plastered to face...We are in the so called vulnerable age and will choose not to go to a Casino for the time being. It is called "free will"...

Thank you, Marsha.  I appreciate it.  I pray for your daughter.  It weighs heavily on them because they are trained to heal but are heartbroken when they lose their patients.

Your concern for your son is definitely justified.  My daughter is a nurse in an elder care facility.  She's been on the same floor for 7 years, so loves many of her residents like family.  Losing 1 or 2 a year breaks her heart, but she has learned to deal with this as normal.

In two months, her floor lost 24 of 40 residents to this hideous virus, and she is emotionally devastated.  She will recover from the exhaustion of 18 hour shifts, but even with counseling, I'm not sure that she will ever be the same person she was 3 months ago.

Keeping good thoughts for your son, and all of the others who must deal with this firsthand every day.

Exactly.  What will happen in places where large crowds are (or really anywhere), is the people wearing masks will be confronting people without (aka public shaming).  I've seen it happen, time and time again.  In most instances, the "offender" either puts one on properly (over the mouth AND nose) or says something offensive and leaves the area (either is a win-win for us mask-wearing patrons).

I have several friends who have died of this virus, alone, without family by their side.  My son is a physician in a hospital.  It is not an easy death to watch.  It tears him up and weighs heavily on his heart.  Wear a mask.  Help your fellow man (or woman).  Is that too much to ask?

Well said. Exactly my sentiment.

My personal observations in locales other than casinos (which I'm still avoiding for now) is that non-vulnerable (whatever that REALLY means) patrons are the ones without masks (I'll say it:  young people).  My particular concern is that they are, in my opinion, the most likely to spend time in large groups and close proximity to others, and if exposed, are the most likely to be in public as a "positive" but asymptomatic, thus high risk for spread of virus.  I don't know if they don't "get it" that the masks are not to protect themselves (if that were the case, I wouldn't care so much if they chose not to protect themselves) but are to protect others if they happen to be positive, and especially asymptomatic positive.....  Either they don't know, or perhaps they really don't care if they expose others to disease, which is kind of sad and scary at the same time..  Or perhaps some of them think it is a hoax.  Who knows -- but we tend to steer very wide when we encounter no-mask persons in public, and to get out of the store or other locale pretty quickly - even quicker when the employees are maskless, or as described, "wearing" a mask on their chin.

With that shooting a few weeks (or more?) ago when an employee told someone they couldn't eat inside a restaurant, I think that the abuse is just a mild example of what could happen.  I would be very fearful of being an "enforcer" and I make a point to thank those that say something to the offenders.

Incidentally, I am learning that "asymptomatic" is one of the more difficult words for me to type:)

I've spent the last 3 days in SoCal and have played at Pala, Sycuan and Harrah's SoCal.  All three casinos "require" wearing of masks.  Patron compliance is not great. All three casinos still offer beverage service and allow smoking so I'm not sure how they expect compliance anyhow.  Casino employees and security do make occasional rounds where they ask patrons to put on their masks.  I do not envy them as I've seen several suffer verbal abuse and major attitude from customers.  Many people wear the masks over their mouth but not over their nose.  Wearing the mask only over the chin is another common technique.  If I understand correctly, masks will be encouraged but not required in Nevada casinos so I would anticipate low usage.  I've also noticed a surprisingly high amount of customers in casinos that appear to be vulnerable populations for COVID-19.
